American Greensomes.

Im due to play a ryder cup style event at the weekend. 36 holes over 2 courses. 1st round either 4BBB or " American greensomes". Ive never played it (American Greensomes) but have been told both teamates tee off, then each player plays 2nd shot with your partners ball then choose best ball then play alternate till ball in hole. Anyone got any experience of this format or advice on stratagy to play this way. Really looking forward to it 2nd round singles matchplay. a full days golf. CAC. Ill let you know the outcome.

Hmmm.  So I think this is

Hmmm.  So I think this is somewhat like a 'texas scramble' but I'm not sure.  In a texas scramble everyone hits a tee shot and the captain choose the best.  From that point on, each player plays HIS or HER own ball into the hole.   This is a nice format when you have some players who don't hit the tee shots very far or consistently.  We do one of these are our club once a year.

That's a little different than what you wrote Cac but I that's the only other format I've heard of.

Now I suppose you could mix this with alternating shot, meaning you could have both tee off, then both alternate hitting shots with each ball.  but that hurts my head...if you make a putt on my ball but I miss on yours, do you putt it again?   OUCH!

Can not say  that I've heard

Can not say  that I've heard of American Greensomes format. Best advice I can give you is to try to find out what the rules are BEFORE you tee off to be safe. Then try to have at least ONE tee shot find the fairway, so your team has a chance. If both tee shots miss the fairway you're in for a long day.

Thinking a bit more about it,

Thinking a bit more about it, it seems a fairer team format as both players contribute at least 1 shot before the optimum ball position is decided. In normal Texas scramble the weaker player will contribute his obliged number of drives but possibly not much else. Will let you know how it pans out. CAC

Hey Cac, so what were the rules for your "american greensomes" event?

Scott, I did not like the

Scott, I did not like the format one bit, it was just as I said. Player a and b both tee off. Then play each other's ball for 1 shot then choose the best ball to continue to hole out playing alternate shots. The course we played had very long rough and we hardly had a choice of ball after both playing 2 shots. I would have much rather played 4bbb. We lost 3&2 :-(

I could have been fine with

I could have been fine with those rules IF I know what they were BEFORE I played the round. I hate it when the rules are NOT very clear  and I don't know what is what until after I get there.

So I don't think I've ever

So I don't think I've ever heard of that format..Interesting.  So it's  a more forgiving version of alternating shot.  If we just played alternating shot, and I hooked the tee shot OB, we'd be in trouble.  But in this format, we get to hit 2 shots first, so presumably 1 of them would be not dead.  Then you alternate that ball till you hole out.  Ok.  Key for  that is SOMEONE has to play smart of the tee.    First man needs to put something playable out there.  then the second guy can be more aggressive.  Interesting.

I agree Scott. Kind of like

I agree Scott. Kind of like playing in a Scramble, ONE of the team players HAS to be smart and put the tee shot in play. After that the other team members can try to hit it longer if they can. I played in a 4 man scramble years ago with one guy that wat Super Long, kike 350 yards long. Only problem was he was WILD off the tee, so it was my job to put my drive in play first, so he could hit away or hold back if I didn't find the short grass. SMART is the key word here.

Unfortunately we didn't

Unfortunately we didn't really think about a strategy and we didn't always have options on a ball. Also on the opposing team was a lady who was a decent steady player. She got around 30_40 yds forward off red tees but hit 160-180yd up the middle most times. Oh well ;-) CAC
