Change of balls during play

https://www.usga.org/RulesFAQ/rules_answer.asp?FAQidx=177&Rule=15

The USGA allows a golfer to change balls between holes but not during a hole unless certain circumstances, like lost ball, ball in a hazard, etc.  For Tour players, under contract by a ball manufacturer, it's a moot point as they only play with ball "X".  But the average golfer could technically play with a distance ball on a longer tighter Par 5 but yet play a tour ball on a hole where they might need more control on the approach or something.

DON
Interresting point Scott

If I'm not mistaken, during a tour event they normally use the One Ball rule, so a playing has to use the exact same model of ball for every hole. This world mean that a player using a ProV1 would NOT be able to play a ProV1X on a hole where he might want a little more spin. But as you mentioned, it would be worth it for the amatuer golfer to use more than one ball to fit the layout of the course at times. assuming he or she could see much difference between ball types.

Should be same ball brand and

Should be same ball brand and model for full round. Although as social players I wouldnt pull up an opponant for a different ball unless I thought they were chopping and changing for the reasons mentioned. CAC

cac handed Geordie.

DON
Same ball rule I brake on the greens

I normallly break the same ball rule fairly often when I play. I do it on the greens when my ball is all dirty, and I do NOT want to waste time and hold up my group, so I pick up the dirtly ball and replace it with a nice clean ball to putt. It's the exact same model ball so I'm NOT changing to a ball just for putting, it's just to save time on the greens. A lot of golfer do the same thing when they play Ready Golf to same time and not always let the farthest from the pin hit first. You do it to SAVE time, not to cheat.

me too Don, or if I don't

me too Don, or if I don't want to lose a good expensive ball on a tight hole or over a big hazard.
