PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. -- D.A. Points, who won the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in 2011, has been disqualified.
While he was waiting to hit his drive on the 18th tee at Pebble Beach on Friday, Points took a green sponge ball out of his bag, put it under his arm and made several practice swings. Fans saw it, reported it to a rules official and Points was subsequently disqualified for being in violation of Rule 14-3.
Rule 14-3 bans the use of artificial devices or unusual equipment during a round. Points shot a 75 and was 1 under for the tournament through two rounds.
“We were standing on the tee; it’s cold, it’s raining,” Points told the Golf Channel. “I pull out the ball and make some dry practice swings, just trying to loosen up. I come to find out it’s an unusual training device, something you wouldn’t have in your bag.”
Points is playing with former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in the team portion of the event. He has the option of completing the event as her partner but the tournament will have another pro ready to play on Saturday in case he decides not to compete.
The two are 4 under and tied for 125th. Only the low 25 teams and ties advance to compete in the final round.
Rice and Points are slated to tee off at 11:11 a.m. ET (8:11 a.m. PT) on the 10th tee at Spyglass with Phil Mickelson and his partner, Rex Tillerson, the chairman and CEO of ExxonMobile.
Points also won the team portion of the tournament in 2011 with comedian Bill Murray as his partner.
