Rocco Anthony Mediate is born in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. Turning pro in 1985, he won six PGA Tour events between 1991 and 2010, but is most famous for taking Tiger Woods to a 19 hole playoff for the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines, only the third time a US Open had finally been decided by sudden-death, after the two were level for the mandatory 18-hole playoff.

Plagued by back problems throughout his career, he was one of the early adopters of the long putter to alleviate his pain. He became the first player to win a PGA Tour event using the long putter at the 1991 Doral-Ryder Open

In 2010, Mediate won the Frys.com Open wire-to-wire in remarkable fashion, holing out from long range on all four days. In the first round he made a hole-in-one at the 189 yard par 3 3rd hole, then holed out from 160 yards on the par 4 4th in the second round for an eagle. In round three he holed from from 111 yards on the par 5 15th hole, also for eagle, and on the final day, tied for the lead on the 17th, he holed out again from 116 yards for another eagle, before parring the 72nd to win.
