Do You Know the Rules for These Two???
Q. How far was the longest drive on the PGA Tour?
What is the correct answer?

A. 351 Yards John Daley, 1991

B. 411 Yards Mark Calcavecchia, 1992

C. 476 yards Davis Love III, 2004

D. 501 yards Casey Martin, 2006

And the answer is ...

Rules, rules and more rules

Q. Larry was playing in a stroke play event. As he too often does, he was playing most of the round on the edge of the woods rather than in the fairway. On hole # 5 his ball was tucked up against a very large bush in the rough. On preparing to take his stance and practice his set-up swing it became apparent that a branch would inhibit (don't you just love that word) him from making an unrestricted back-swing. Larry carefully bent the interfering branch back and tucked it behind a larger branch that held it out of his way. Larry then proceeded to top the ball but did get it out into the fairway. But I digress. Excuse me, got carried away. Now back to Larry. His opponent called called a 2 stoke penalty. Larry protested.

What is the correct answer?

A. Larry did nothing wrong bending the branch out of the way of his swing, so long as he did not break a branch. No penalty is warranted.

B. The playing partner was correct. Larry can not bend branches. But the penalty is only one stroke, not two.

C. The playing partner was correct. Larry can not bend branches. Two strokes is the correct penalty.

D. This is an obvious 15 yard penalty. Ball is to be re-spotted at the point of infraction, 1st down.

And the answer is

Ill post again on Monday

It's fairly late of Friday, so I'll give all of you until Monday to post your answers to these two rules question. I'm hoping to read a few correct answers on Monday guys.

Still NO answers????

The Correct answer to ONE of these two rules questions is C. You figure out which one C goes with and then it's YOUR turn to get the other one.

I will guess that the correct

I will guess that the correct "C" answer is the two stroke penalty for bending a branch out of the way.

For the longest drive, well it must be the ridiculous 501 yards scored by Casey Martin in 2006.  I've not heard of either so it must be true!

DON
501 by Martin is NOT correct

Casey Martin was the golfer that filed a law suit against the PGA to allow him to play on tour and use a golf cart, due to a health problem that prevented him from walking the course. He WON the law suit and did play on tour, once if I remember right. And it was NOT him that hit the longest drive on tour, so D is not the correct answer for that question.

I remember the Casey Martin

I remember the Casey Martin issue.  tough situation.  It had to be tough to be making that call.  On one hand you had a player saying the rule limits his physical ability to compete, on the other hand other players weren't allowed to do it and it creates inequities.  I expect this issue will come up again at some point.  There are other forms of employment Casey could get.  I mean he chose a career in a position that he wasn't physically able to comply with the requirements to play.  I don't want to appear insensitive, but a sport has to be able to be fair and equal to all players.    Tough call.

Drive wise, I will say B, Mark's.  I know the Daly's not right as I saw Day drive it 380...but then again, they only measure those officially on certain holes.  So I could be wrong.

For the other I'll say "C".  As a major infrasction of bending the branch (and rule) to improve his swing, he should incur a 2 stroke penalty.

Answer B is also NOT correct.

Answer B is also NOT correct. Anyone want to try to get BOTH answers for the two questions?

DON
The Correct answer to BOTH

The Correct answer to BOTH questions is C. Two of you figured out C was correct for the second question, but no one came up with the right answer for nuber 1.
