Golf Club Reviews and Discussions
Got needled last night and chastised by my acupuncturist for playing golf too soon. I do feel 10x better after last night's treatment, it was a pretty intense one, so I'm likely to wait 2 weeks for the next (and likely final) one. I may be done with golf for the season. It was such a lousy summer I don't even care any more, I'm fed up. Only sorry that I didn't think to wait to get treatment until December, since I will be kicking myself if we have a nice October (I like Fall golf once the yellowjackets die but before all the leaves fall off the trees).
It's not how...it's how many
I played (if that's what you could call it) in Arizona at Desert Forest Golf club. Nice desert track but tight and I was struggling for some reason everywhere in my game. Did hit some solid tee shots with the driver but few and far between. I had 1 birdie and 2 pars. That tells you the kind of score I shot. Long day. Timing just felt off..the range warmup was pretty good. I think I started not trusting my swing and tempo got off. and then started to get frustrated. Greens out here are a little different than back home..so many underlations on the green it was hard for me to figure out what was going to have more effect. I hit a few bad first putts but using AImPoint, i made almost all of the second putts. Only 3 putted once.
Chipping sucked too..because of how the greens reacted..and sand shots. Just nothing good yesterday. Today we play the TPC Scottsdale course where they host the Phoenix Open event on Tour. This should be another high score :) but I plan to have fun and try to relax a bit more.
Golf is a game that can only be played...
Today was better golf swing wise. I used the G400Max with the stock shaft exclusively today. And I'd say my only poor tee shot was on 18 where I for some reason raised up on the swing and so I thinned it pretty bad. Otherwise honestly I had good or very good results from the Max. Shot 87 but there were a couple holes on the TPC Scottsdale Course where I just had a brain meltdown. greens were quick. Course was in great shape. it was $200 but it was super nice. Hit some great irons today too, had several good looks at birdie but just missed the putts. Had 1 birdie but should have had 3.
Sounds like you enjoyed yourself, Scott. I know they overseed this time of the year so if you have more rounds in mind, make sure you check before booking! I played the other course at TPC Scottsdale many years ago, not the one they hold the tournement on, it is easier and I believe the rate is lower. If you are playing more rounds check out the ASU Karsten course, we enjoyed it last time we were in AZ.
Thanks Aimee. Courses are overseeding...I know the first course we played was getting ready too. Stadium course was gorgeous and after playing it, i can see why the pro's might shoot 5 or 6 under each day. it's honestly not a hard difficult golf course. I really didn't have trouble getting off the tee and as consistent and long as the pro's are, that shold set up nice approach shots for them.
Today's round is at a private club, Troon Country Club. Then it will be time to head home to NC for me.
So Troon was very nice. Desert course for sure..but mostly fair in terms of hitting shots. Didn't play as well on the back 9. Front 9 shot 41...back 9 shot 47. Just had too many shots where I was either overswinging or trying to steer. And missed every putt I had to save anything. A lot of time I Didn't try to do the Aim Point putting because the greens were soft and I was standing in someone's line. But with my reads, I was just missing..things rolling over the cup edge and not falling. I was tring to find breaks that weren't there. Driver did well except when I put a bad swing on it. Lost a few balls today because of the tighter fairways. heading home tomorrow...so back to reality
finally, a weekend with sunny days both days is forcasted. Since we had more rain during the week including Friday morning, I refuse to play on Saturday as the ground is saturated I am sure it will still be soggy. Playing Sunday, I still have some bruises from my dry needle treatment, but I should be OK to play. Might hit a dozen balls on Saturday just to make sure.
perfect weather for the whole weekend, played Sunday to give it another day to dry out (ground saturated, course was still soft after 2 days no rain, cart path only, some traps still had water in them)...and this was the links style course! I was a bit uncomfortable for probably the first 3 holes due to not being sure how my shoulder would feel. Generally OK, some minor discomfort and felt better as I warmed up and loosened up. 47 on the front, 44 on the back, couple of pars, played same ball all day.
Nice Aimee. Hopefully won't be too sore tomorrow or Tuesday. Surprisingly my back has been more closer to pain-free since starting to use the inversion table.... and I just bought a new mattress that I'll sleep on for the first time tonight. So hopefully I'll still feel good tomorrow :)
Played 9 holes in the mountains Friday..just fun outing while on some vacation. Course has lots of elevation change and small greens..Donald Ross...grrrr! Didn't really keep score but I had several pars and missed a few decent birdie chances. if I had to guess i'd say about 4 over for the 9 holes. Had a couple nice drives. Just didn't putt well. Greens were very soft and I was trying not to stand hard on them and leave foot prints doing my Aim Point work. The DNA gofl shoes I have REALLY dig into the ground so I try to be careful in situations like that and not hurt the greens. hit a few really solid Irons. Just not enough of them.
hitting the range tomorrow to work on irons and test the Ping driver with both my shafts.
Scott, thanks, shoulder feels good today. I think the exercise actually was beneficial. You should feel better with a new mattress, too. Also check out some yoga stretched, they are good for the back. I hear you on the Donald Ross greens, Tillinghast also had some tricky ones. Since my “home” courses have pretty small greens, I am used to that, but Tilly had some crazy undulations on the greens. It is interesting about your shoes...I have been wearing some Eccos which have “nubs” rather than spikes, initially wondered how the grip would be in wet conditions but have had no issues, even walking up steep hills.
Perfect weather yesterday. Played 18 on a course that is pretty open for the most part. Didn't play particularly well. Hit some really nice drives..Hit some solid irons, but missed a few are bad times. 2 doubles on the front 9 due to poor swings leading to penalty shots. Lost 1 ball off the tee when I hit just a really poor swing. No birdies but had chances. SHot 85 which on that course is not very good. I'm still having the issue where about 2 or 3 ill-timed bad swings..
Funny thing: 2nd hole hitting the new driver, the ball went way right. still playable but odd given I usually produce a draw with the 400Max driver. Well I found the ball ... or most of it....There was a section gone from it. I was surprised. I didn't see any maintenance guys mowing anywhere...all day. So not sure how it happened but a hunk was missing of the ball. Funny.
Played on Saturday with the guy Michael and I usually pkay with, as Michael was out of town. It was gray, damp, and never got above 68 degrees. The course was still pretty soft, wet in a lot of areas, sand in bunkers was wet. Towel got a good workout, constant grass clippings on the clubs and ball. Large areas of the fairways are very damaged from all of the rain, deep tire tracks from stupid maintenance staff, and areas with no grass. They had cut diamond pattern into the ground and dropped fertilizer on the exposed dirt, I guess in hopes that it will establish a good base for spring regrowth. Did not play well overall, short game was pretty good though, and I did not lose my ball...actually made par on my nemesis hole #9 with the carry over water to the green for 2nd shot. Had one birdie, I think 2-3 pars, the rest were bogey+. Wound up with 95 and wet socks.
Not losing a ball is a plus. Soft conditions like that i'm prone to lose one plugged somewhere in the soft dirt
Walked 9 holes at the course I'm a member of...just wanting to work on making some solid iron shots. First hole is a left to right to left Par 5 where you can't hit much other than a mid-iron off the tee. So for me it was 6I, 8I, wedge...all hit pretty well though I needed more out of the wedge to get back to the pin. But surprisingly made a 35ft putt for birdie! Nice!
Gave it back on the bnext hole when my 3W started to go wrong. But made 6 pars and 1 bogey (3 putt bogey on a Par 5!!) to shoot 1 over on the 9 holes. Could only hit the driver 3 holes on this 9...of those 1 was hit so - so...but playable (made par) the other two were hit solidly though one found the rough when it didn't draw. Putted pretty well overall, green speed caught me off guard. It was pretty quick. Had 6 GIR and 15 putts. But I only had 3 FIR out of 7 but on two of those misses, I was able to make Par. Should have been 3 but I 3 putted 1 green.
Hoping to get to the range or the course for 9 sometime this week.
Looks like some rain...again...on Saturday and very cool Sunday (50-51 degrees) so probably not going to play unless something changes.
Saturday round at Mercer Oaks East again. We had a little rain overnight so we had a later tee time 11:40 and also one 1:30 pm to see what woukd be better based on what we woke up to. Decided to play the 11:40 as it didn’t rain much and it stopped early enough. Temps got to low 60’s, sun came out a little on the back 9 so it was pretty nice, winds gusted to 10 mph. A very inconsistent round, wound up with a 91 with 4 pars and a birdie, but also had doubles and triples. Had 3 three putts and 5 one putts...I was putting pretty aggressively so if I missed the hole, I missed by a lot, and usually the 3 putts were from having to go from one end of the green to the other. Had some issues with hitting my hybrids suddenly, although I did hit one 5h perfectly fine off tee on a par 3 and made that par.
No birdies Friday when I played 18 holes with my dad. Overall OK round, hit the ball better than I scored. Shot 80... missed several decent birdie opportunies. Had a couple doubles and a lot of Pars. A few self inflicted wounds...hitting the ball down the fairway on a short Par 4 only to chunk the wedge shot into the green and make bogey. Just coming off a Par on a tough hole, I hit a terrible te shot on a Par 3 and the ball bounces off the cart path OB. Nice double there. Struggled to score on the Par 5s. Most of them are shortish and I can reach in 2. Went Par-Par-bogey-bogey.
Overall hit some good iron shots...the rough at this course is frustrating..3-4 inch deep bermuda rough...where you basically play the shot like a bunker blast shot since you can't get the club on the ball without grass getting in the way. So that was not fun...never knowing what sort of lie you would have...put as premium on getting in the fairway.
Putted OK. had a few par save 1 putts. Probably had about 31 putts overall. used Aim Point on most putts. Made several par saves with it especially one long 15-20 footer. But still learning to feel the slight breaks with the feet. When I can see the break I'm decent at getting the amount of it but i'm not good yet and figuring that feel for slight breaks.
Played 9 today....
At my newly renovated championship course. Very nice improvements. Championship bermuda greens in .. new bunkers ... new fringe/rough and some new fiarway designs. They renovated/reduce/create new bunker complexes..so now there are new ways to play some holes. Should be fun.
Drove the ball OK .. hit 4 of 7 fairways but the other 3 were in the rough so still playable. 4 pars, 5 bogeys. Some of those bogeys where missing the greens on approach and having to chip up. Didn't putt great on the new greens. Speed I got but line I was off. Also pulled a couple. Need to practice Aim POint and the break on these greens.
Irons wise...Holes were mostly driver wedge..but I missed the green on both Par 3s..bogeyed both. Par'd the Par 5 on that side.
May get out for 9 again tomorrow after work...and maybe knock off to get in 18 Thursday.
PLayed 18 today...another inconsistent round. Should have been even Par through 4..but 3 putted 2 greens. Had 2 birdies..each i followed with either a bogey or double bogey. Driving was pretty good today but twice chunked approach shots so that sort of nullified the driving into the fairway.
Putting wise played some with left hand low because I have felt this week like I wasn't putting well. missing my lines. Anyway it was fine, only had one bad putt and that was a solid strike just too firm and went way past. Right now the putting just feels off...Going to be cold and rainy this weekend so probably wont play.
Lousy weekend here in NJ also, Nor'easter rain storm Friday night into Saturday a.m., chance of showers Sunday...although it might be in the 60's so if it doesn't rain we might be able to go to the range, at least.
got out for 9 holes today...reall inconsistent but went straight to the tee. trying to beat some potential rain. Struck the ball well at times with irons but tempo was off a little. Hit a few drives ok but struggled with the 3W. Was just practicing so rehit several shots. So no real score. but switched out my putter (Ping CRAZ-E from many years ago) for the Nike Method I bought about 5 yrs ago...and actually putted pretty good. Have ben putting bad..but went by Golf Galaxy before hand and was trying out putters thinking it might be time for another one. But I may try tthis one a few more times.
No golf here this weekend. Cloudy and cool on Sunday, not nice enough, plus I'm sure it would have been soggy with the rain Friday-Saturday and no sun to dry it out. Long term forcast shows mid-60's on Wednesday, if I'm slow at the office I may just have to sleaze out. Not too much playable weather left in our season (maybe a month) and the weather has been so lousy we have missed more golf this year than any prior year.
Walked 9 yesterday. Shot 40 on Par 35. No warm up..since we were walking on just taking a tee time...was about 40 degrees when we started. Started with 2 bogeys, one due to hitting my wedge approach a little long and having a down hill chip on our new greens. Ball sped past the hole about 10 ft and I missed the Par. 1 double bogey, hitting my real first iron shot into the water on a 180 yard Par 3. After than did OK. Went 1 over over the last 6 holes. Drove the ball pretty well. Biggest problems was getting the yardage right on the cold morning and my 70-80 yard approach shots. Hit those further than intended and lead to 2 bogeys.
The new greens are very fast but roll true..starting to get used to how soft I have to hit them..but getting the line at those speeds still needs some work.
We played on Sunday, it was one of those perfect Fall days, temps in mid-50's, no wind, the leaves were ablaze (not all fallen yet). A bit cool on the last 2-3 holes as the sun dipped lower and the treeline cast shadows, we finished around 4pm (with Daylight savings time in effect). I didn't play particularly well, I don't think my head was in it. I hit some really good wedge shots (flop, chip) but had several 3 putts. Lost one ball due to conditions...our 17th hole plays into the setting sun, the green is backed by a lake, and the fairway is lined by trees which have carpeted the ground with fallen leaves. I hit a shot maybe 2 feet off the fairway and couldn't find the ball. We couldn't see any shots off the tee due to glare, then if the ball didn't land in the fairway, it was covered in leaves. The down side of Fall golf.
Yes...I did that too Aimee...mine was lost in the new sod on our course, which was also blanketed with leaves. Took a drop and played on!
Played in my final tournamanet of the year at my club. Hatfields vs the McCoys. Each member is assigned to a "family" and the season ends in a 2 day match play event between the 'families'. I'm a McCoy...and we haven't won in a few years. Played 18 yesterday...in the wind and temps in the 40s. Didn't score well. Hit the ball OK but managed to either 3 putt or clip a branch. Shot 84 the first day..didn't win my match but our team did. I was giving my opponent a astroke a hole almost all day .. that's tough to beat. Today scored better, again playing a guy I had to give 17 strokes too. manage to win today...my opponent didn't hit the ball very far so I had that advantage and was able to maintain a lead most of the round. Shot 81 today, win up 5 with 4 to play.
Poor weather coming up..so not much golf in the hear future.
30's ad 40's the last few days with wayyyyyyy too much rain. Supposedly going to finally see some sun tomorrow and the weekend...getting to the 50s....augh...I miss summer already
We got major snow this week it was supposed to be an inch, but the warmer rain didn’t show up so it snowed most of the day and we wound up with around 4”. Melted except for shady areas the next day. Since I got my almost like clockwork upper respiratory infection for Thanksgiving, couldn’t have played even if it were warm enough this weekend.
SOrry Aimee. Hope you feel better soon.
We;ve finally have a few days of sun...beautiful since Firday just the courses are still wet. Have played 9 holes 3 times. Hoping to play Monday as well. First 2 times, played pretty well. Shot abotu 40 or 41. Par's mostly but had a few wayward tee shots here and there or a 3 putt. Greens are really fast right now. Today was just pretty bad overall. Went straight to the tee out of the car and just wasn't in sync. I hit a few good shots and made one long putt.
We'll see what tomorrow holds... :)
Got in several 9 holes rounds over the holidays We had decent weather most days so walked 9 to get exercise. One day shot about Par, switching up the tee boxes to finish before daylight. I like the senior tees! ha. Played one of our Par 5s from there..it's 575 from the back tees about about 475 from the senior. Hit a great drive that left me 205 out, hit a great 5I to about 10 feet and made the eagle putt. That day I putted well. Had a birdie, an eagle - took only 12 putts over the 9 holes with a couple up and downs to save par.
Next day, different 9 holes and different story. Just off on most shots. Putted OK.
Next day shot 40, making Par on 5 of the last 6 holes, but basically jumped out of the car to the tee box so warm up was non-existant.
New grips on the irons and heading to Florida for some sunshine...hope to play at least once while there.
Enjoy your trip, Scott. I wish I could be there with you rather than putting up with this winter weather.
I have a friend who just came back from ST. Pete's area and said he can still feel the sandals on his feet!
