Golf Club Reviews and Discussions
Outside chance of playing Sunday, temps supposed to be low 50's, depends if the rain holds off until evening. May just wind up going to the range to get some swings in, if not.
It's not how...it's how many
Have had several days of warm temps here..got in 9 holes of practice the last 2 days. Lots of people out so hard to just play one ball having to wait so long between shots. Been working on bunker shots while waiting on the greens. Hadn't played in several weeks but it was nice to get the rust off a little. Hit some solid iron shots today but also some not.
Did use the new pull cart - the Rovic by Clickgear. it's nice. Has a swivel wheel on the front but I find you have to be careful when to use that. On any sort of slope the swivel turns with the slope and you're constantly redirecting the cart. it's easy to lock and unlock so it's fine. But my stand bag fits better on this one than my old push cart.
Golf is a game that can only be played...
Got one last round (most of one) in today. We planned tp play 13 holes since there is a paved service road that runs straight back to the clubhouse, so its the easiest place to walk off. Teed off around noon, temps were 50-52 and their were high clouds, it was nice when the sun came out, although there was not much wind for the most part, so it was pretty pleasant. Grass is dormant, the fairways were covered in springy carpet like stuff. The greens were very slow, still showed some residual aeration marks from the Fall that never filled in. The round was as bad as I figured, since I hadn't played in 2 months. First hole I sent everything right and then remembered to hold my arms in tighter (extra layers affect me). Most everything came up short due to temp and swing mechanics, hit a couple of decent shots but only sniffed par on the par 3's. Short game didn't come back until the end, no feel. Although on the last hole we played, I almost holed a bump n run shot, would have been nice to walk off with par.
Aimee, I struggle with all the layers too when its cooler. I've finally gotten several thin under layers that help . Will have them on today..planning to get in 18 but while it was 70 yesteday today will be more like high 40s when we start to mid 50s when we finsih.
Played 9 yesterday late..walking hitting multiple shots per hole just getting in practice. Drove the bell pretty well most of the day but admit with this being the 4th 9 holes in 5 days, the back started to tighten up mid way through - especially as I took 3-4 approach shots. Sand game is doing better..been practicing that a lot.
We'll see how the back holds up today. I'm going to try and walk the 18 holes since I want the exercise and it's not a terribly hilly course. plus there's only 3 of us and I'll probably be teeing off from a different tee than them. We'll see how it goes. haven't walked 18 straight in a few months.
HAPPY NEW YEAR
Scott, Happy New Year back to you. Ref the muscle tightness, Michael has been using a lotion with CBD (and he recommended it to our golf friend, who uses it too) and said it helps. He uses one that warms on contact. You have to spend some $ to get a good brand (he got some from a friend in the business, the brand is called Elevate, it is made in a FDA inspected plant, etc.). I have a base layer from Columbia that has a silver foil like lining that reflects your body heat back to you (only keeps me warm if I actively exercise to raise skin temp) but generally I prefer a Nike baselayer turtleneck that is thicker than Under Armour and has a fleece-like lining. The layers over that are my challenge, I've even tried wearing a fleece jacket and just taking it off before swinging, but that is annoying. At 55 degrees I can go with windshirt as the top layer (over 2 other layers), which I prefer. I wear wool socks and either cords with tights under or I have a pair of lined pants for golf. I'm cold normally, so it's tough for me to figure out the best configuration.
I bought some CBD oil when I was out west, now it's for sale in Carolina so not that hard to find though what I tried before when I used it for my back didn't seem to do a lot. I tried it on my wrist...not 100% sure if it helped but .. the pain did go away a few days later. hard to know if it was that. Am sore more today...walked 18 holes yesterday..played with some friends and it was cart path only so I just walked with my new cart. So a little stiff today.
Overall played well. Shot 81 with 4 doubles, and 3 birdies. The driver worked pretty well. The doubles where over the top pulls that left me with drops. Some of the pin placements were cruel..like you really shoud never put a pin there. So I 3 putted once or twice but mostly putted OK. Just missed a few recovery shots. But it was nice to get out for 18. might try to get 9 more in today..then rain comes in for 3-4 days..
Was about 50 today and sunny ... Walked 9 today and played actually pretty well. 6 GIR ,,, and other 3 I missed I made Par on one, bogeyed another and just missed saving Par on the 3rd. Shot 3 over had 1 3 putt. But drove the ball well and hit some very solid irons. May be about 5 degrees warmer tomorrow if I can get out for a few holes late afternoon I may. Got a lot of rain coming in this week.
It's supposed to get warm (relatively) here over the weekend, but we are also getting rain end of the week so it depends when that stops. If it is mid-50's I'll go out again, rain will keep the ground soft and wash some of the gross goose poop away. Wow, over the winter when there is not much play, the geese really make a mess of the fairways.
Got to play today, it was fairly cloudy but it did get in to the low 60's. Pretty windy, we were playing our links style course and the hats were flying off at times. Played a little better than last time, still not great, shot 96 with no balls lost. Several putts not made due to condition of greens, round would have been more like 92 under normal conditions. Made par on 2 of the par 3's. Almost holed a couple of chips and one sand shot that wound up about 4" from the hole. Saw a group of 4 deer at the edge of the woods and a nice hawk. Way too much goose poop on the fairways, yuck.
No chance to play recently. And the weather is turning cold..like 40s and windy. So probably won't try to play. After some unseasonably warm temperatures, seems like we're finally getting to back to the norm. I like my new push cart though...works well. Maybe in a week or so I can get out again.
Cold here...20's at night and 30/40s during the day. Did walk 9 the other day when it hit 50 but didn't play well with the layers on. hit a few good shots but not many
70 degrees today...
hard to believe..was 40 when we woke up..supposed to be around 70 for the high. Walked 9 after work. Lower back is acting up again. causes 2 problems..1 I can't really go at a swing and 2 - I tend to hit my irons thinner since getting down to them is a little tough right now. but couldn't pass up the weather and the steps. So just tried to take it easy. Did OK. Driver was pretty good. putting was good...Wedges were good..just missed some irons with the tight back.
GOing to be warm this week but rain midway through so probably don't get another 9 in.
Continued rain here for much of the last few weeks so not much chance to play golf. That coupled with painting/remodeling the basement..not much free time or incentive to go play in the cold rain. But it's MID FEBRUARY already... time flies...almost March which means Spring is around the corner! Masters, warmer temps and hopefully drier weather!
Hope everyone is doing well.
The weather in NJ has been extremely warm. We are generally having temp's in the 40's and have spiked up in to the 50's a couple of times (my unemployed hubby has gotten to play a couple of times). I have off on Monday and we are looking to hit the range early afternoon. With all of the rain we have had all winter, hoping that the Spring isn't a washout, too. The turf should be outstanding since the ground has stayed soft.
First mens league tournament is Sat...hopefully I can get to the range late in the week...otherwise it could be ugly..
Wow Scott, seems early in the season for a tournament, guessing the swings aren't as "dialed in" as they are in the summer? Early forecast looks like we may be in mid/high 50's Sunday, so we have a tee time. Probably will just play 9 if we do...
Yeah...these nuts here...men's club 'season' begins in Feb and ends on Oct..not much 'off season' huh? Oh well..going to be 1) cold...suppsoed to snow tomorrow night lke 3"....2) my game is WAYYYYYY off ... haven't swung a club in weeks. But it's forward tees, 3 "throws"...so it should be fun I hope...though if the white stuff is still on the ground, might have to play cheap golf balls in case I lose them..
White stuff...take your cheap golf balls and put a line in ORANGE Sharpie all around the circumference, if you don't have any yellow balls to use. Good luck!
Well...2 days after a few inches of snow, we had our first tournament. Most of the snow was gone...course was wet so I walked it. Having not hit many shots in a few weeks I did OK. It was not a postable round because there were gimmie putts and mulligans since it was "easy day". had a good time..overall about met my expectations except with the driver. Luckily from the front tees I didn't need to hit it much but when I did I didn't really control it well. Want to hit a fade, hit a draw. Want to hit a draw, hit the fade. With it pretty wet and cool temps, my wedges dug in a bit much and I left a few shots short. Made one natural birdie...
Did see one of my playoing partners have his first Hole in one...Short Par 3..120 yards...hit it just past the pin and it trickled back into the cup. Cool to be there for that.
3 more days of rain this week so..not likely to get out again this week. Starting a basement remodel..so good thing I already paid the membership dues :) disposable income will be a little tight for a while.
Played on Sunday, it was low/mid 50's, cloudless sky, wind around 10 mph so that was a little annoying, but not terrible. We played the links style course so I was exposed to the wind most of the day. Really nice on those small areas where I could get out of the wind and feel the warmth. Obviously conditions were a mess (winter). Although thankfully not wet so the goose droppings were pretty much "freeze dried" and you could knock them away. Terrible score (96) but I did have a couple of pars (including putt out from fringe on #18), some really ugly swings, not surprising. Hopefully March gives us some good days for practice. Too cold this coming weekend.
Glad you got out Aimee...yes..cold spell coming .. 40s the next few days..think I'll focus on inside the house projects :)
Beautiful weather here...near 70...but stuck doing house remodel work so no golf...then traveling the next 2 weeks...Hoping to play sometime though. Anyone else getting out?
We played on Sunday, it was a little cool at the start, but warmed up to mid-50's. Played our parkland style course (Mercer Oaks West), saw some evidence of some work having been done to drainage and/or sprinklers in a couple of fairways. Thank goodness, because there were several times I saw water bubbling up in a couple of places, must have had some cracked/broken connections. I played pretty poorly, really need practice at this point more than play. Although my putting was really good (one 3 putt). Had a birdie on a par 3. One hole I overshot the green and "putted" my ball from the shallow bunker onto the green and holed it. That was cool. Wound up with a 95 IIRC.
Looks like that was my last round for a while, they closed our County courses effective tomorrow, 2 weeks for now.
My course is still planning to have events and still playing...I doubt I'lll play this weekend at least not in the event. Given I haven't picked up a club and my back has been off again with all the house projects, I think I'll sit this one out and maybe play in the afternoon. Our monthly event is Sat and I asked what they were doing regarding COVID-19 and it sounds like eliminating everything but the golf, drop off your scorecard and go. Makes sense. My pool league was suspended for several weeks. Schools out. Waiting to see our bowling league cancelled too but not yet..stay safe all
Well played 2 9 hole rounds Friday and Sat...Friday - first time I'd picked up a club in a while. Actually hit the ball a lot better than I expected especailly off the tee. Second day didn't hit the ball as well...but still managed to not lose a ball and shot around 41 of so. Hope to playt later this week..2 days of rain coming but then should clear up and temps get back into the 70s...
There are several golf organizations in PA that are petitioning the Government to be allowed to re-open as they feel that they are no riskier than a walk in the park. Perhaps some in NJ will follow. If they can figure out a way to let us pay online (no transaction in the clubhouse) it would be great. I don't need anything in there since I bring my own snacks/drinks, just need them to allow access to the bathrooms for sinks to wash up!
Yeah....our courses are still open at least but standard things done...no seating...can checking without going to the desk, no cash....1 person to a cart...I walk so I don't need much other than to hear "go ahead..."
Weird time here...shelter in place in effect...but we can go to parks and golf. Played 18 Saturday...played 2 balls mostly off each tee box since it was so crowded so we didn't stay on top of the group in front of us. But thankfully the group behind us was playing from the wrong tees most of the day and so we always had 1-2 holes between us. Overall drove the ball pretty well. A couple mistakes but the biggest challenge is still the putting since the greens are so slow. Not sure why but maybe they're just not bringing staff in and mowing often. Weather's been great so it can't be they are worried about losing them.
Played 9 today...5 pars 4 bogeys. Drove the ball OK most of the day but irons ehhhh..couple over the top pulls. Trying to play Saturday. Weather should be awesome. Hope everyone can stay safe.
Keep going as long as you can, Scott. The golf associations in NJ and PA are sending petitions around to try to get courses to re-open but so far, no dice. My County courses likely wouldn't no matter what because they are State employees. My friend lives near a golf course and she said her neighbors sneak on and play like 3 holes, then go back home.
