Golf Club Reviews and Discussions
Michael and I played with our friend and a random single, since our friend's son had to play very early to get home for something. We had gone to the range on Friday afternoon and I hadn't worked out my hybrid woes, so I was a bit uncertain how things would go and contemplated sticking with irons. The good news is it came around as the round progressed, I hit some good hybrid shots on the back 9, actually on #9 I hit my 5h over the pond and made the green, which was a relief. Did a bit of scrambling, my putting back on track, 33 putts. Had 4 GIR and 4 pars. Conditions were firm and fast, which favors me with my straight (usually) drives, since I have top spin they rolled a lot. Greens were pretty hard, no ball marks, had to play short and bounce/roll up or risk rolling off. Wound up with a 92, considering one dunked ball/penalty, I am satisfied since I felt I made some improvement. I made par on #18, a par 5, which was very satisfying (driver, 4h, 7i, 2 putts).
It's not how...it's how many
Forgot to mention...since we have been leaving the flagstick in the hole 99% of the time, in yesterday's round there was one putt by our friend that was definitely bumped out of the hole by the stick. It was sitting sort of leaning within the hole, the wind was moving it a bit, and had it been pulled his ball would have dropped (side door), since it was going pretty slow the stick just pushed enough to divert it. I told him I gave him that putt
Nice Aimee. Sounds like getting out if starting to take some of the rust off. I hope I can play this week...back had been acting up...did a chiropractor this week..a couple more appts next week but hoping to get out next week.....
Golf is a game that can only be played...
Walked 9 for the first time in a few weeks. Back has been on the fritz lately. Overall pleased with the way it turned out. very windy day..didn't really keep score as it was busy and I took some chip shots around the green and rehit some fairway approach shots. DId have a birdie and a few pars with some other thing mixed in. Hit a few good iron shots and most of my drives were playable so all and all, happy with how it turned out. The back and legs are feeling it today a bit but it's all good.
Michael and I took a lesson Saturday, this is someone he saw last season and really liked, he's almost an hour away, but its a good facility. I was able to actually do some bunker work. Playing the day after a lesson is always hit or miss (literally). I got out of a greenside bunker well, thanks to the lesson. We played our links style course, fortunately I missed most of the bunkers, did go into a couple in the fairways, mixed results. Shot an 89, 5 GIR, 5 pars, 36 putts. They had aerated the back nine recently so most of the greens were fair to poor, hard to putt well. I really just blew two par 4's with 7's, otherwise got around pretty well, the other holes were bogeys. Really have to find some time to practice or the lesson was a waste of time.
Well walked 9 today...been slowly working through some back pain..but has been better the last few days. The swing work I've been doing has been helping. Had one of the better tee to green days I've had in a while. if I was counting my score, probably shot 3 over for 9 holes. Had birdie putts on 7 holes but didn't make any!!!! that sucked. But I hit some really good iron shots today and drove the ball OK. Par'd both the Par 3s which is usually not the case.. One is about 215 over water.
Our course though is doing a mini-tour event..3 day event..has about 15 golfers..Playing from the tips..which is stout. Winner gets $4K, second $1500. They tee off first thing in the mornings so I haven't been able to go by and watch them. But the leader is 1 under after 2 rounds. So not bad from back on the tips.
Wasn't able to play last weekend, and no range time. So playing after 2 weeks off not very good. Our usual guys were playing a different day so Michael and I were sent out with a random single golfer, nice guy. I pretty much bogeyed every hole, picked up on #17 because the wind had kicked up and blew something in my eye, had to wash it out. Made par on #18, the par 5. Course was firm and the ball was rolling for miles, I had one drive roll out like 200 yards. Had to play for the front of the green, nothing would stick, no ball marks was evidence of how hard they were. My putting was acceptable, I don't think I had any 3 putts. Probably would have wound up with a 93.
I put a net up (again) outside and try to take a few swings each day. But I'm hitting off carpet so after a rain, it's too wet for a few days...
Walked 7 holes today..planned to do more but I had to jump around some guys in front of me that had 3 3-somes...and I didn't want to work my way through them over the 9 holes..if I were playing 18 that would be different..but I'd have been on 8 before I got through them all.
Anyway..overall pretty good day..ballstriking with the irons was one of the bright spots.hit more than the normal number of solid iron strikes for me. Drove the ball fine...no lost balls....well 1 on the first tee because I went straight to the tee box and just swung...so no practice either Aimee.
1 birde...2 or 3 pars and the rest bogey maybe 1 double in the 7 holes. Course is looking nice.. it's firm but it's in good shape..they punched the collars of the greens to loosen/soften them up. Need some rain now..
Played a couple 9 hole rounds after work lately...overall I'm pleased with ball striking..Fiurst 9, I hit some good irons which was nice. Made 2 birdies. Driver was mostly working, only 1 errant tee shot. 2nd 9, the next day, it was a head to the tee box and tee off..so I think my timing was off. Sort of reverted to my bad habits. But by the 4th hole things were getting better...Had a great drive on 8 and 9.
Been walking with my Sunday bag more often, just carrying about 6-7 clubs. It's enough for practicing which is mostly what I'm doing. Easier than pushing the full golf cart around. But the strap broke today so i have to get another one. all and all I like the bag..small, light ..
We played in our usual 4some last weekend, there had been some rain prior 2 days so it was a little wet, a bit cool at the start of the round. This weekend it will be really hot. The up and down temps are crazy, 30 degree swings. Anyhow, my game is up and down. I see progress in some things, but I'm hoping now that I have a new employee (I have been doing the work of literally 3 people the last 3 months) I might have some days I can get to the range. Michael is away visiting his daughter, so I'm playing with our friend and his son on Saturday. I'm going to need the umbrella and the sun sleeves!
Umbrella is getting to be needed these days...Been awful sunny here too. Its one thing that makes me want to always use my push cart. I'vebeen carrying the SUnday bag some rounds... The push cart is harder...but I can more easily carry water and other things.
Irons are coming around...I feel like the 3 or 4 things I worked on this spring are finally starting to come together.. Need to play a full 18 sometime to see. Maybe this week.
Saturday was cloudy and it stayed pretty cool, low 70's. Michael and I played with a random single, nice guy. Only 3 in front of us and we wound up waiting on them several times, we were playing fast. I think we finished in less than 4 hours even with waiting. I sense more progress in the swing, I am feeling the motion of hands leading the swing and body staying behind the ball. I didn't play exceptionally well, shot 91, but a handful of strokes were putts coming up literally one inch short (slow greens). Had a sandy, too. I still don't like hitting out of bunkers, but at least now I am not terrified of them. Had 3 pars, 1 GIR, 33 putts. No balls lost. Played our links style course and there were some dead cicadas here and there, and you could hear them off in the distance, the swarm started about 3-5 miles from the course. They were as big as my thumb.
Played 9 today...playing 18 Saturday though. Today was after a lot of yard work yesterday so sort of stiff. Had 1 birdie, 3 pars...and a lot of Bogeys. No lost balls today. hit a couple really good drives but struggled in the sand. iron play wasn't great. hit a couple nice shots but more than a few on the toe. it's Sunn this week 80s-90's so hope to get out a few times.
Michael and I played Sunday after breakfast with his son and future daughter-in-law. It wasn't too bad when we teed off a bitafter 11, but the heat and humidity ramped up on the back 9. I definitely felt a loss of concentration, had a 42 on the front and 47 on the back. 5 pars, 3 GIR, 33 putts, no balls lost. I felt that I had some of the best ball striking of this year so far (at least thru 14 holes), I was pinning the ball on the green. It was a good feeling to be able to build on what I was feeling last week.
Well..played 2.5 rounds in the last few days...the first 18 I played well..shot 79...hit 11 of 13 fairways. Should have been better, but the greens were really really slow due to the heat and the course leaving them long.
Played 12 holes a few days ago but played bad..I'm blaming it on the yard work I did Saturday...and being tired and sore.
Today went up into the NC mountains and played. Started off OK, -1 after 2...finished the front oin +3...then the back 9 became much more a mountains course. Tight landing areas, huge elevation changes. So show like 85 total I think...blah...but incredible views
We played last week and the sky opened up after the 10th hole, one of those localized showers, the next hole had tree lined groves on both sides, so we took cover for a while until it passed. I had my umbrella on the cart for shade so I stayed pretty dry and the only thing soaked was my putter cover since that stuck out. We had been paired with 2 singles, one we had played with before...he left after the rain let up. The other guy was in a cart by himself and he was kind of rude...not nasty, just one of those guys zooming ahead and playing like he wasn't with other people. I was kind of put off by him, then the weather issues, didn't play all that well.
Today Michael and I were paired with a couple of 20-something guys who were really nice. I had a good couple of holes, had 3 GIR, 31 putts, 4 pars, 1 birdie, and 1 EAGLE (par 4, hit driver/4h and it rolled into the hole). Unfortunately I had too many doubles and wound up with an 89. It is frustrating to make some of the same mistakes repeatedly. No balls lost.
wow Aimee nice on the eagle. Those are always nice. Yeah..repeated mistakes get frustrating. For me, without any real practicing, I try to not over-react too much when I do that. I'm usually going to the course and not the range so I figure without warm up I'll make a lot of poor swings in the early holes. Now that's when I'm just out there walking 9 and enjoying the afternoon. If I'm playing 18 I usually hit a bucket and warm up. No recent golf for me...been busy getting ready for a 4th of July party...now that that's over I'll try to get out. But it's hot here now..91...so we'll see
Road 18 yesterday...overall played well. I wasn't totally keeping score as the greens had been punched. Drove the ball better on the back 9.
Have been working on my chips...I tend to have the club face a little closed back and through which makes my chips lower and bite a little more. But many times I need to loft something higher so it will land softer. So worked on trying to keep the face more open back and through the shot. Did pretty well. Didn't skull any which is what I usually do when I'm trying to work on it. Also been working on my sand shots around the green. My swing tends to be too strong/long so they fly past the hole. So been working on shortening the backswing and also not having quite as much speed in the shot. hit one fat that didn't get out but the others I did pretty well with.
It's hot here..90's all week. So not sure how much I'll play this week.
Needed a break from work...went out and walked 9 late today. Greens were re-dressed with sand so mainly just working on irons and driver and wedges. Overall was pleased with ball striking. Didn't hit a drive out of play..found essentially fairway or first cut on 6 of 7 holes. The other was a GIR but I drove through the fariway a decent amount. Irons I hit pretty well. A couple times I needed one more club because I cught it on the toe. All and all pleased with the way things went.
Got invited to play today so snuck out late afternoon. Got in about 16 holes so that was fine. Overall played well. The work on the higher chips is paying off. i made 1 of my 2 birdies hitting a flop shot that rolled to about 1 ft. Irons were mostly good though had a few toe shots. Made 2 long par putts on Par 3s which was surprising...slowish greens as hot as it is here.
2 rounds since my brief lesson...very much a mixed bag. There are some shots that are really good, but still no consistency. If I practiced I would at least have a chance...but it has been too crazy with work and no spare time. The instructor wanted me to work on getting more hip rotation into the swing, which will add power. What I found while playing is that if I think about that, it messes up my swing. Therefore that is something that MUST be worked on at the range. One good thing is that I've gained some distance that I had lost with my driver, and I'm still getting out of the sand OK (from my other instructor's lesson). I really just want to shave 5 strokes off, I'm shooting generally from 89-92 and I'd like to get back to mid-90's which I did achieve before (prior job, when I had more time to practice!).
As an aside, our last round Michael and I were paired with 2 random singles, both middle aged guys. At the first tee one of them says he's playing from the Black Tees (back)...and it's OK because he's a 17 handicap. Needless to say, he was playing the wrong tee (he said he "likes to challenge himself") but at the end of the day...he didn't actually hold us up, he had a cart and he was a speedy player.
Hmmm...I sometimes play the back tees, when I'm trying to get my handicap higher .. because that's what it's going to do. If I play well then I can get around that tee box with only a few extra strokes. Usually though it's going to be 5-6. The Par 4 second hole becomes 490. The Par 5 8th hoe be comes 575. The Par 3s become 235 (over water), 195, 190, 235 (water again!). So the slightest mistakes and the score balloons. if I'm by myself I may play there because I know I'm not affecting anyone.
Aimee, it always gets worse before it gets better. And yes, you need to work on that hip rotations at home or the range, not the course.
I have been on vacation, so no golf for me. Hope to get out tomorrow afternoon and maybe Monday. No telling what level of game I will bring with me. I did a lot of river tubing the last week so my arms are pretty sore. Who knows how it will go...LOL At least it's cooling off a little here..been in the mid/high 90's...now back to the 80s;
We had some crazy weather come through on Thursday, there was a tornado that passed directly over our town around 7pm but thankfully it didn't touch down near us (plenty of damage done to the west, it started in PA and demolished a car dealer). Wasn't sure what I'd find on the course but other than maybe one tree branch down and traps that were still wet (casual water or just wet sand/dirt), you wouldn't know anything happened. Michael and I were paired with 2 retired FBI agents (work buddies) and they were a real "Mutt and Jeff" pair. Nice guys. Shot around 92, no balls lost, plenty of putts just missed (left too many of them short). Had some lousy lies in the traps and lost a couple there (they have completely let our traps go, they are starting to look more like waste areas in a lot of areas, with little sand and tuft of grass poking up). Hit some good shots, on a short par 3 my PW looked like it had a chance for one bounce and into the cup but it bounced past, so I settled for par.
FBI agents? wow.. you never know who'll you'll run into on the golf course.
Tried to walk 9 today but a big storm started to blow in and we were on the 5th hole. I had just hit a good tee shot on 6 when the wind picked up and the clouds got really dark. We decided to move over to play 8 and 9 but the rain picked up so we walked (ran?) in since wer had no cart. before that I was actually hitting the ball well. Didn't putt well but drove the ball well on 4 of the 5 non-Par 3 holes. Hope to get out once or twice this week if things go well..but I have to go back to work aftr a week of so could be kinda crazy.
Did get in 9 holes of practice today. Heatwave broke and was able to walk 9. There were people out everywhere so basically hit a tee shot then hit a variety of 2nd shots until the next hole was clear. As always, found something in my tinkering today that seemed to work. Not sure it will work the next time I go out but we'll see. Have been moderately successful in figuring out how to hit lofty wedge pitch shots. usually mine are lower with spin and bite and check up...which is fine except when I need to pitch over something and land soft. The issue now if being able to judge how far to hit those shots and how far they'll fly. Left a lot short today as I was pitching around the greens.
Rain tomorrow so no golf till maybe Wed or Thursday.
Played our links style course today, I didn't play last weekend due to family obligation Saturday/weather Sunday, but did hit some balls at the range yesterday. I played reasonably well because I tried to play smart(er) when I had iffy lies, for example, hit a short iron layup rather than going for the green. So I avoided maybe coming up short and going into greenside bunkers or rough, and gave myself easier approach shots. Net result was also that I didn't go in to a single bunker. Lost one ball in the weeds due to a blocked drive that flared right over a hill, never found it. Front 9 was 42 with 5 GIR, 4 pars, 18 putts. Back 9 was 45 with 1 GIR, 3 pars, 15 putts. I made par on the 18th hole by sinking a decent length putt, that was satisfying!
Back is recovered i think so once the storms pass here I hope to get out and walk 9 holes...maybe tomorrow evening or Thursday. We'll see
Weather looks iffy this weekend due to a hurricane out at sea (no direct hit, just rain) coming past, one of our courses aerated earlier in the week, others next week. Unlikely to play. Probably will just do some range time if there is a clear window for an hour or so.
Walked 9 yestefday...shot 39. First time playing in like 3 weeks...due to back issues and travel. overall drove the ball well. irons were OK, missed a couple GIR opportunities with pulls but mostly solid. Bunker play was OK, got out in 1 each time :) In fact one was an up and down when the ball rolled with 1' of the hole and I was able to save Par. Hot this week so not sure how much I'll be able to play
Walked 9 today...actually hit the ball really well though I didn't score great. Birdied the first hole with a great drive and a short chip by the hole. Should have had par on the next hole but I hit my par putt too firm and went past the hole. Over the next 7 holes really hit the ball pretty well but managed to bogey several holes. In 93 degrees and walking..I tired by the 9th...and left my approach short in a bunker and it plugged. Anyway...shot 41 which was not really how I played but that's why we count them all...Ha
