Golf Club Reviews and Discussions
Probably will take off on Friday (will be closing the office early anyhow), Michael has a tee time and the weather is looking good. Cool weather next week, again.
It's not how...it's how many
First 18 hole round of the year. Michael wanted to ride, so we shared a cart, which spared me the soreness the day after the first walking round. I stopped keeping score after the front 9, which was mostly doubles. I had a shot at par on a couple of par 3's. Lost 2 balls, one due to going offline possibly into the woods, one in the water at hole #9. Due to my eye issue, my depth perception is completely messed up and ball contact was inconsistent. Generally found that irons were easiest to hit off the ground. I really don't know how many more times I will play before the surgery, it is frustrating.
Played Sunday with our regular guys, walked 18 on our links style course. It was a little gusty at times, but pretty nice. Aeration holes still a factor on the greens, the ball was jumping off line unless you really hit it firmly. I struggled with my eye issue, but figured out that I could hit off the ground/low running shots a little better since the depth perception issue wasn't as much in play as when the ball is elevated on the tee (driver was difficult - did not hit too many solid shots). Thank goodness my short game is good or it would have been a misery. I shot 97, definitely lost shots on the longer holes. I did manage to make 3 pars (2 par 3's, 1 par 4). I just fear that my compensation may be screwing up my swing. I've got 4 weekends to potentially play before I will be on the bench prior to surgery, and since my June will be completely shot, I feel like I should get the rounds in while I can.
Well it sounds tough Aimee...I know for me playing without my glasses and not being able to see the ball well as it travels is frustrating. But the depth perception piece is got to be tough. When I change glasses or contacts, I have some of that standing over the ball and it's frustrating. Good luck with the surgery, when is it?
Hit the range a couple times for some practice with ball striking. Not been happy lately..seems like that has helped. Use some impact tape and kept working on staying behind the ball and I have sort of gotten some good swings in. Walked 9 today.. usually I like to finish the first 4 holes and 1 or 2 over and I feel OK, cause they are the harder holes except for #9. Today finished them with 4 striaght Pars, 4 GIRs and 8 putts. then hit a good drive on #5 but the firm fairways carried the ball into a water hazard. A drop and 3 putt later I had a double. Then 3 putted the next 3 holes while having GIRs. I HATE THAT!!!!...Another bogey from a chunked chip but followed that up with 3 nice shots on #9 and a tap in Par. So finished with 40 (5 over) but at least I had some success with my swing. We'll see if it carries over Wednesday in leauge play. Weather I hioe has finally stablized...and cold cold temps are gone!
Golf is a game that can only be played...
Next round looks like Sunday, weather looking really nice. I have my eye surgery (right eye first, the bad one) on 6/20. Left eye on 7/13.
Due to how they need you to not wear contacts for a couple of weeks prior to the pre-surgical exam, then you can wear contacts until surgery, I actually have 3 weekends in June/July where I can potentially still play prior to any surgery, or between the two surgeries. However, both Memorial Day and July 4th weekends are shot for me
Michael and I played today, random single guy played with us, as our friends played yesterday. Beautiful Spring day, first weekend that we had 2 nice days. I think I am getting used to my temporary eye issue, I was doing better on the back 9 last round, and today was very solid. I am swinging truly by "feel", which may actually be helpful in the long run. Additionally, after watching some golf on TV, I realized I wasn't bending from my hips, so by doing that I had more solid contact. Shot 90, dunked one ball in the pond at #9, 5 GIR, 4 pars, 36 putts. Had two 3-putts, aeration holes still messing up the greens. Am getting a bit more yardage with the new driver, I can tell by where my ball is ending up. Mishits go further, too.
BTW, I have switched to neon yellow golf balls, I am finding them much easier to see. I bought a pack of 9 used ones from Ebay, that's going to last me the rest of the summer. I'm a traditionalist, if I can go back to white balls after surgery, I will!
Have played a few 9 hole rounds in the last 2 weeks..game is getting there but still not real happy with consistency. One time I top my iron shot, next time I hit it solid. So we're getting there but still a ways to go. This is the most topped shots I've made in a while. But driver has been pretty good. Most of my scores are about 41-43 for 9 holes. but if I can remove those mistakes, it should be most like 38-39.
Tweaked my back today so no golf for at least a couple days. Good thing it's a rainy weekend
Member Member coming up this next Sat/Sun...we'll see where the game is. I walked 9 yesterday and struggled a bit with my sand game. So spent some time at the range today and felt better as I left. I think I'm going to hit the range Mon/Tue..Play Wed..chip/putt Thur/Fri to save my back. there was a senior event the county puts on I qualify for now but it's literally the Thu/Fri before the member/member..didn't think my back could take 4 straight days of golf. I screwed it up abut a week ago and it's not 100% yet . So some range time and the rest the days before. Put the 5H back in the bag and took out the 5I. haven't been hitting the 5I well.
I have to think about how to setup my bag for Sat and Sunday. VERY different courses. The Sat course is tight..I think I use the driver maybe 4 times at most on the front and maybe 2-3 times on the back. But I might need a low iron to punch out with and the 5H doesn't really fit that bill. Maybe a 3W can punch out ok??? have to play with it. The Sunday round is different. I could hit driver on so many holes. I need to work on hyrbids and fairway woods off the tee for the Saturday round. I will be using them a lot
Played in our regular foursome today, the conditions were tough...we had a fair amount of rain Saturday and the fairways had a lot if standing water where the ground was saturated. The greens still aren't fully healed from aeration, but should be fine next weekend. Shot 90 despite dunking 2 balls in the water on holes #9 and 17. With that, I would say I had a pretty decent round. My short game was on fire, I was putting shots in close enough for legit one putt range. Only went in to one greenside bunker and got out. Couple of one putts, no three putts.
Nice Aimee. Always nice to chip it close! great weather here this week so hoping to play a couple times before the weekend's member/member. Been struggling a little with bunker play. Watched a few videos and going to practice that several times this week. Weird..I go from pretty decent to hitting them fat or thin. So want to focus on that a little before hand. but our bunkers have been wet after this weekends rain...so hoping they've dried out more tomorrow
Scott, maybe with your back being sore you aren't maintaining your posture and/or knee bend when swinging from the sand?
Well also think I may have been swaying a little..but then again you could be right. Half the bad shots were picking it clean so maybe it's posture. been going to the range the last few days and following some video bunker ideas...seems to be better. I started generating more speed flipping the club through the sand. Popping out higher now. But overall the ball contact is better...so goal for the weekend event..just have fun, go through my routine and commit to the shot.
Enjoy the weekend, I probably won't be playing since I have to start not wearing one contact lens the end of this week and I really don't think I can play half-blind. May try the range to see how it works. Otherwise I'm on the disabled list for the next 2 weekends.
Well...good and bad results..I had some hiccups but did make a birdie on each of the 2 rounds. Day 1 I helped my partner decently but Day 2 my game was off and I didn't help much. I shot 82 - 84...and I really expected the 84 to be more like 78 but had trouble with a couple tee shots and a few wedges. We came in 2nd so did win something but it was a lot of fun being out there again.
Lots of rain here now so not sure when i'll get out thiis week.
Walked 9 today..bogeys all the way except a double on one hole..Nothing "bad" but .. just screwed up somewhere. Chipping was not great. No warm up so .. I don't feel terrible about it but ... I did make some good swings toward the end. But .. oh well..I was golfing and not working.
Last 9 was not great scoring. Actually hit some solid shots but didn't put shots together. 43 for 9 holes. Driver was OK but then just missed a lot of GIRs and had to chip up and make bogey. Going to get a lesson soon....time to stop diagnosing my issues myself
Definitely sounds like a lesson is due...you know the longer you go, the more engrained the issue(s) get, so go get straigtened out and back on track! Early season tune up! I can't play right now so I need you to go get 'em.
yeah, i emailed our pro ... hope to get one next week. I played 9 Wed and it was bad. weird, cause before that I played Monday and I hiit some solid shots. But Wed, shot 47. that's a lot for me. So hopefully he'll see something cause clearly i can't fix it myself
You know what they say, play how you practice! My only shot at playing will be 2nd weekend in July, next surgery is 7/13 and no exercise is allowed for 2 weeks after (I can only walk). Sending good thoughts your way for smooth swings!
Played 2 rounds in the last weeks. Shot 75 one day at a course that doesn't peamlize you too much..then shot 83 a couple days later in a 5 club event. new swing mechanics are getting better but I need a lot more practice. but when I do it right, it's smooth and powerful. Planning to walk 9 tomorrow
Cleared by the Dr. to play this weekend, weather looks good, I'm in!
Since my last time out on the course was the Friday before Memorial Day...a mixed bag. We hit some balls at the range before teeing up.I would say my swings were split 25% really good, 50% acceptable (like a wormburner that went a long way), and 25% bad. It took me until the back 9 to figure out that I needed to move the ball back when hitting my 4w off the fairway. Back issue resurfaced on the back 9, also. So much for healing in these past couple of weeks. We took a cart rather than walking, so that was helpful. I think I had one par, stopped scoring, likely mid-90's score. Course was in really great shape, for the most part (ignoring the bunkers). Enjoyed the day nonetheless, next time out will be August.
August? due to receovery or work? or both? I played Sat,18 holes with the gang at the club. Some holes I did well, a couple birdies on Par 5s..but iron swing isn't where it needs to be. I miissed every Par 3 green and 2 of them I was basically in my pocket because I ihit my tee shot so bad I couldn't help my team. Net score wasn't terrible, low 80s but the staggering difference in swings was not good.
Walked 9 today..well 7..we skipped 2 holes due to a bad and SLOW group of 3. But the driver was OK. I think part of my problem is I am not consistent with my take-away. sometimes it's nice and smooth and then other times its to far outside. So going to work on keeping that take-away more consistent. When I could focus and try to do that, the iron shots were mostly OK. Did hit a few really good but all were playable
I can't play for 2 weeks after surgery, so that puts me at 7/27, I guess technically I could be playing at the end of July...
Well good luck. My knee is keeping me from playing as much as I'd like..cause I have to ride...(I'm cheap!) but I'll probaly play tomorrow or Friday. Hvae a tournament Saturday - 4 man thing so hopefully my sucky shots won't kill us
Good luck with your tournament. It is so hot here in NJ our course postponed the club championship for 2 weeks. Too hot to play this weekend, if I am up early on Saturday may go to the range when it opens at 10:30 before the heat becomes unbearable. Heat isn't going to break for a while, and I've got a busy week next week, so probably looking at next weekend for a round.
Well didn't hit the ball well Saturday.. We finsihed like 5th...My iron play was still bad...i missed all 4 par 3 greens. it's killing me. Range was OK...but I didn't take that to the course. putted well given the speed of the greens (SLOW!!!!) due to the heat and bent grass. But feel like I'm making progress on contact but just not to a point it's there all the time. Did have a few great iron shots but just not to the point I can expect most shots to be stripped well.
First full round walking 18 holes in a long time, and I was tired. Back nine fell apart after I birdied 10th hole, lots of 6's. I had 2 pars and one birdie, putting was really good, had alot of one putts. Lost 2 balls, one in plain sight on the 2nd hole, which is so frustrating. I just didn't see it after I hit it to know where to look for it, and because of how the tee boxes line up, nobody was anywhere near me to watch. Definitely rusty from not playing regularly, and I am sure my tiredness was a factor in the back 9 melt down. I know there were a couple of times I went against my gut for what club/shot to hit because of not being mentally sharp and on my game. Might be too hot to play next Saturday, and we have someone visiting Sunday, so one shot at playing looks dicey.
