It;s getting COLD out there.

The weather sure is getting colder, and the sun is going down a LOT earlier these days. It will not be long before a lot of golfers will be putting their clubs away for the winter. Sun rise is now at 7:00 AM here in Denver, and sun down is around 6:45 or so. When Daylight savings Time ends, it will get dark an hour sooner, close to 5:00 PM before long. This NOT good news for golfers at all. Only good thing to come from Winter is there are LESS crazy golfers out on the courses, so you can play 18 holes in a lot less time when it's cold and the leaves have fallen off the trees. I'm sure glad I don't live in Buffalo N.Y. anymore. Way to cold and nasty at the east end of Lake Erie for playing golf in the winter.

When will YOU stop playing golf in your area of the glove? In the Denver area, I get to play all year round some years. Other years we get too much snow on the ground to play golf, but many years the snow melts off in a day or two and the courses are wide open for play. First three years I played this crazy game, I got to play 12 months out of the years. Since then it's been hit or miss you might say. What about where you live and play?

cooler

generally we will play as long as the temp is over 50 degrees and it is sunny, not too windy. I get too cold and can't stand wearing all the layers, feeling the constriction (even with modern fabrics, you still have to layer). During the winter our county courses stay open, they generally rotate one being closed each month Dec/Jan/Feb to give it a break (I suspect it saves some maintenance costs, too). When the grass goes dormant, chewing the fairways up doesn't do it any favor.
Thanksgiving is often the cut off for tolerable temps, but we've gotten some moderate (freakish) warmer days in Jan or Feb once in a while. Since the snow pretty much started in Dec last year and didn't melt until March, no winter play in NJ. More likely to go to the range, can tolerate cool temps for an hour in a somewhat enclosed hitting area.

Dold weather protection

Have you tried any of the OMNI-HEAT base layer products from Coumbia?? I picked up a upper and lower Omni-Heat base layer last year and they work great. They keep the heat IN, and the moisture wicks away. Very light weight and NOT at all restrictive when swinging your clubs. They come in three weights so you can pick the right weight for your sport and weather. I got the Mid weight versions and they work fine for golf. Heavy weight is more for Skiing or Hunting in the winter. If your legs tend to get cold the tights would be worth a try.

Make that COLUMBIA.

Seems I left out the l in Columbia when I posted my reply. Sorry about that. I don't have the option to edit my posts so I can't fix it or I would.

Here we can play all year

Here we can play all year round. Sometimes I'll put the cart cover on and the fire up the heater and play when it's in the 40s. usually if it's sunny, and I have the course to myself, it's not too bad.

Here, by 730 it's pitch black out. Had a buddy go play the other day, started about 430 and took 2.5 hrs to play 18 (had the course to himself) and he finished just before it was getting dark. So now, it's getting to the point where we have to play about 1-2pm or else we risk not finishing

DON
Too Early or TOO Late??

Timing can be a problem with tee times in the late fall and winter. TOO early in the morning and it's COLD out there. Too late and it gets DARK and it's hard to see for the last few holes. Around here I like to get a tee time around 10;00 so it warms up a little so I'm not freezing my fingers off, but not so late that it starts to get dark on the back nine. Bad news is that more and more golfers have learned the same thing, and tee times fill up fast for the 10:00 to 11:00 time slot.

I'm NW of Buffalo, so winter

I'm NW of Buffalo, so winter golf is a no-go in my neck of the woods. The course I was working at usually closes the first or second week of November depending upon weather which is typical for my area although some try and stay open longer. Our golf season starts generally around the first of April, give or take a week or two depending upon weather. My wife and I are planning a two week stay in Florida this coming winter in Early March to give us a head start on next season.

DON
Buffalo weather

I know what you mean about winter golf and the weather in the Buffalo area. I spent a year in the Air Force stationed at Niagara Falls International Airport. Then I lived in a suburb of Buffalo for 2 years before I moved to Colorado. See used to say we had TWO seasons in Buffalo, Fourth of July, and Winter. There's a reason I moved to Colorado, and it was the weather in Buffalo.

Hah hah, Don! Everyone I have ever met in the southern US that was originally from Buffalo said the same thing re: the weather and why they moved! But hey, it could be worse, you could have been stationed in Minnesota! ;)

Summer is back for the weekend

Like most places in the world, weather can change in no time. About 6 weeks ago we had overnight FROST that kills the plants in my garden. Now we have a forecast of MID 80's for the weekend. Normal highs for late October is 65", so mid 80's will be nice while it lasts. The Broncos will be on Thursday Night Football this week. Should be low to mid 70's at kickoff time. Can't complain too much about that. NOT what our Ski resorts like to see when the Broncos are on national TV. They LOVE it when it's snowing like crazy. They get thousands of phone calls for ski trip bookings when it snows on TV for the Broncos games. Seems that what is good for the Ski industry is NOT good for the golf industry.

DON
Broncos WON

Not only did the Broncos WIN last night but the weather was great. 69 degrees at kickoff time is pretty good for the end of October I'd say. it got up to mid 70's before the sun went down, so I'm not complaining one bit. Forecast is to set a record high for today and Saturday, about 20 degree OVER the average which is 62*.

Baby It's COLD out there

If you live EAST of me, get your cold weather cloths ready. Today at 10:00AM is was 60* out, then ONE hour later it was down to 40* as the cold blows in from Canada. Snow forecast for most of this week and high of 10* by Wednesday. Not going to get up to freezing until Sunday or so. NOT my idea of ideal golf weather for sure. Good luck back East as it's heading your way and fast.

about a 20 degree drop over this week. The up and down is the killer, I'd rather get used to one temp.

40's would be GREAT around here.

We had temperature yesterday that were down 40 degrees from two days ago. It was 60* yesterday at 10:00 AM, the it dropped down to 30* by noon. It went from bright sunny skies and warm to cold and cloudy in just 2 hours. Today the high with luck might get up to 20*. Over night lows around ZERO for the next few days, and we will be lucky to get above freezing before Saturday. And all this nice weather is heading EAST, so get ready for it.

Going to be real cold the

Going to be real cold the next couple days...i think tomorrow is supposed to be about 35 for a high and as cold as like 19 degrees in the morning. We were talking about heading to the coast this weekend to play golf and the temps will be fine but the front coming through will bring rain there...augh....I'm tired of playing golf in the rain!!!

Warm Friday

The forecast is for close to 60 on Friday with mostly sunny skies, so I might have to head for the range while I can. No telling when I'll get another chance to hit balls with warm sunny skies. Good luck if you decide to head for the coast to get in some golf.

Glad I'm not in Buffalo!

Glad I'm not in Buffalo! They have just been hammered over the past 24 hours with 3 feet of Lake-effect snow. Being to the NW, we have been spared the worst of this storm with around 6" accumulation, but the persistent winds in excess of 35 mph are making for a fair bit of drifting. Temperatures in the low single digits. I90 has been closed from Rochester to the Pennsylvania border. The golf season is now officially over!!

we have dual zone heat and heater #2 up in the attic conked out on Monday, so it is 5 degrees cooler on the 2nd floor of our house...if I keep the downstairs cranking at 69 degrees it is only 64-65 degrees upstairs. Service guy coming this morning, it's probably something silly like the pilot light, but since he had done a very thorough service on the whole system earlier this year, I felt he needed to make a return visit to spare me going up into the attic.

DON
Buffaalo not for ME

I spent two years living in Buffalo after I got out of the Air Force, and it was terrible in the winter. I'm sure glad I moved west when I did. Latest I saw on the news is that they now have 6 FEET of snow on the ground and it's still coming down pretty hard. I hate to think about what traffic conditions will be like for the next few months up there. With the high humidity in that area, the snow sticks around for months when they get 3 feet of snow, so this will be a MESS up there for months.

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT, NEVER AGAIN.THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

OK for now

Forecast for Sunday is partly sunny, high 53, SW wind around 7 mph so looks like we will get another round in. Everyone is going to be sick with these crazy temp fluctuations, it's going up into mid-60's on Monday, then dropping 20 degrees again a couple of days later.

HIGH of 60 in Buffalo today

I see the forecast for Buffalo is in the 60's for Monday, with wide spread FLODDING due to all the snow they got and it could melt way too FAST in the next day or two. Let's hope not for there sake.

yuck

Working from home today as the weather is forecasted to turn white this afternoon. Ran out at 10am to pick up pies for thanksgiving and it was coming down sort of slushy, roads still just wet (warm enough for now). Gonna get messy this afternoon for the busiest travel day.

Then it is supposed to be back up to 55 degrees on Sunday. Crazy stuff.

Nice today

Today the weather looks pretty good, Sunny skies with a high close to 60 in the forecast. If it's still sunny at 11:00 I think I'll head to the range and hit some balls so I don't forget how to swing a club.

Hit some balls

I got in a nice practice session yesterday. High got up to 60 so it was nice. Meet a guy that said he couldn't hit a driver to save his life, so he only carries a few fairway woods in his bag. I told him i could have him hitting a driver inside of 10 minutes if he was interested. I let him hit my SnakeEyes 600TC driver a few times with a few changes in his setup and grip pressure. It took a few swings to work everything out and get him hitting my driver pretty well. After about 25 balls he was hitting my driver pretty well. NOT perfect, but I didn't think he would with only a couple dozen tries. Now he is going to find his old driver and bring it with him next time he hits the range and see if he can as well with his driver. If not I told him to give me a call and I would build him a new driver for about half of what a new one would cost. He was quite pleased with how much he improved with my assistance in so little time. I might have to look into getting PGA certified and start teaching part itme.

Nice job Don.  Not a bad gig

Nice job Don.  Not a bad gig actually.

Getting cooler and wetter here over the next few days so not much golf in the forecast I am afraid.  Which is fine.  I have house projects to do anyway.

So last night at Bowling, I have to say, for the first time ever, I had strikes in the first 9 frames...came down to the 10th frame needing 3 strikes for a perfect 300 game and .. couldn't do it. Threw a good ball in the 10th but left a the 10pin....which I wound up missing..probably since I hadn't had any practice picking up any spares given I had made all strikes.  Ha!  Can't complain I guess.   Anyway, the 267 was my highest game ever.  Was able to finish it off with 2 other good games as well so I did my part for the team!!!

DON
Nice Game Scott

I don't remember the last time the wife and I went bowling. I think the MOST strikes I've ever put together might be 5 at most. Never really played the game enough to get more than that. I would think the NERVES would have been acting up when you stepped up for the 10th frame. Hard to stay calm when you got 9 and only need 3 more for a perfect 300 game.

As for missing the TEN pin, I can totally understand why you did it. The ten pin is the hardest pin to pick up for most right handed bowlers that throw a big hooking ball. You have to throw a much straighter ball with a 10 pin sitting on the right edge of the lane. And with SERO practice after 9 strikes, it would be that much harder to do.

Bowling is like golf in a way. If you can't break 100, you might want to find a different game to play. Big difference is that with golf, if those that can't break 100 gave up the game, the course would be WIDE OPEN half of the time.
