Michael Kim, the 2013 collegiate player of the year, will make his pro debut

Michael Kim, the 2013 collegiate player of the year, will make his pro debut at the Farmers Insurance Open on Jan. 23-26 at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, Calif.

Kim was in the midst of his junior season at Cal; he is a Torrey Pines High School alum and hails from nearby Del Mar.

Kim finished T-56 at the Web.com Tour Qualifying Tournament, which concluded Tuesday, to earn conditional Web.com Tour status for 2014. He is the third member of the 2013 U.S. Walker Cup team to to turn pro, following Max Homa and Justin Thomas. Homa (T-6) and Thomas (T-32) also earned Web.com Tour status for 2014 at the Qualifying Tournament.

Kim made the cut in two PGA TOUR starts as an amateur. He finished T-17 at this year's U.S. Open and T-38 at The Greenbrier Classic.

This is the third consecutive year a prominent collegian has turned pro mid-season. Peter Uihlein, the 2010 U.S. Amateur champion, turned pro in December 2011 in the midst of his senior season at Oklahoma State. Jordan Spieth turned pro a year later during his sophomore year at Texas.
