Michelle Wie has 6 woods in her bag at the British open

Just listening to the broadcast today..Wie's pulled all her irons it appears below a 6 or 7I and has gone with woods.   She has 6 according to the commentators.  I think in additon to the Driver, 3W, 5w ,  Callaway Epic 9Wood and a XR 11 wood and not sure where the other one is.  Maybe a 7W?   .

"The 11-wood replaces my 5-iron,” Wie said. “The 9-wood replaces my 4-hybrid.”

“I think Callaway has done a great job of accommodating me. They had to look back into their archives to find me an 11-wood. But I have an Epic 9-wood and I think XR 11-wood. They've been great. I definitely had to cut [the 11-wood] down. I've never played such a high-lofted wood before, so they've done a great job of working with me and making it work.”

Why an 11-wood?

“It's a lot easier than hitting a blade 5-iron,” she said

I can understand why she has

I can understand why she has done this. The longest iron I carry is my 6 iron, and then I have 4 woods plus my driver. I carry a 3w,5w, 7w and 9w in my bag now. They replace my longer irons and for me they are a good bit easier to hit then the long iron they replade. Add to that the fact that the ball flight is higher and the ball stops closer to where it lands, which is especially on approach shots into the greens where I want the ball to stop and hold.

She's always been someone to

She's always been someone to try something as long as it works but not afraid to be non-conventional.  ergo the table-top putting style she had.  I agree Don, I'm not surprised.  Those do work.  I guess it comes down to control.  I would imagine the irons given them ore ability to control the shape and ball flight but if they don't need that, go with whats easier to hit.

What convinced me that I had

What convinced me that I had made the ideal choice for me was when I was playing a 210 yard par 3 at Meadow Hills, which has relitivey soft greens. It was 210 yards to the flag according to my Laser range finder so I pulled out my 24* 9 wood. I hit the ball nice and solid and it landed on the green a few yards left of the flag. When I got to the green, I found my ball about 5 or 6 feet pass a good size ball mark that was about 5 yards short of the flag. That left me with about 10-12 feet for birdie on this 210 yard hole. The ball flight was nice and high which helped to allow the ball to hold the green, something I doubt I could have done if I had hit a 5 iron for this shot.

Since that day, I have hit my 9 wood on every 200-210 yard par 3 hole I've played, and I;ve never been disipointed in the results I get with it. I'd guess that i have a very makablte putt on these holes at least 75
