Spieth shoots 79 to open....

ouch!  not the openning round you'd want...

Jordan Spieth stood over an 8-foot par putt on the final green at the Northern Trust Open on Thursday afternoon. It was the kind of putt he's made numerous times over the past few years, the hallmark of a game that has helped him ascend to No. 1 in the world.

This time, he missed -- and then he missed the next one, too.

It was emblematic of an uncharacteristic round for Spieth, who posted an opening-round 8-over 79 for the third-worst score of his PGA Tour career.

"It's just a day to forget," he said afterward. "It's one in, hopefully, every couple years. I've shot 80 before. I've shot in the 80s a couple times on tour.

Jordan made up for that poor round by winning this weekend. He was Lights OUT on the green in the final round. I don't remember how many LONG putts he holed in his winning performance. And he had a Chip in for birdie on one hole near the end to add insult to injury for his challangers. Notning like Birding the last THREE holes to put away the win and give the world a look at what might be in the near future for his cliam back to number one in the world. I think the top three golfers in the world rankings are scheduled to play this coming week, so it should be fun to see who has the best game on for the week.

Don, i agree.  Was that not a putting exhibition or what.  It was just wrong...And he made that one on 18 just trying to lay it up close.  Wow.

I still think his inability to find the fairway is going to hurt him in a few weeks at the US Open.   After last year, he made some comments that he needed to find more distance to try and keep up with Jason Day.  I don't think that's the right idea.  He was awesome last year.  Why change his game?  I mean I understand, you identify your weakness and try to turn that into a strength.  But trying to add distance has usually not gone well.  Phil tried it...lost control of his swing.  Luke Donald tried it, didn't work for him.   Now I'm not saying Jordan can't find it but there are plenty of guys who don't hit it as far as Jason and Bubba and Dustin, who are still great great great golfers...

I totally agree about the

I totally agree about the issue with distance. While i'ts always nice to hit the ball farther, it's NOT going to help if you miss more fairways. First of all, you have a Harder second shot from the rough, or worse. Second you don't get much ROLL when the ball lands in the rough compared to when it lands on the fairway. So even if you gain say 15 yerds, which is a LOT. you lose distance when you miss the fairway more often. I think most golfers would rather have 200 yards from the fairway over 185 or 190 from the rough.
