Thanksgiving 2016

Well, I just decided to host my family for turkey day this year. It should be pretty easy, we have a small group this year (I'm guessing 8) since my husband's kids are all out of state this year.

I will make turkey breast (nobody eats the dark meat, and for a small group, it works well), stuffing with mushrooms, Mom will make twice backed potatoes, Sis will make some kind of veg, I'll probably make some other veg also, canned cranberry sauce and a relish made with fresh berries/orange...apple pie from local farmstand (ice cream), cookies or brownies...

What's on your menu?

My job will be to cook the turkey so we can take it over to my in-laws on the Saturday after the big day. I will cook the turkey in a brown grocery bag as usual. as that works really well and the turkay comes out nice and moisture and tender that way. Wife will cook potatoes with a few Sweet potatoes mixed in with the white ones. Mother in law will make her great jello salad as usual. Pumpkin pie will come from Costco as that's the one we all like the best. Not sure what else will be on the menu but it will be MORE food than I should eat I might throw a few carrots in with the turkey to cook in the oven with the turkey. That works out well and is very easy to do.

Well I will be hosting my brother and my kids, maybe my Dad depending on his busy visitation schedule with friends and family.. Ha!   I suppose it'll be ham this year.  We didn't grow up having turkey often, mostly ham but over the last 5 or so years I've doen a few turkeys.  But, if the group is small, we may go out to eat instead.  Football will be on the menu for sure :)

going out

we went out for Thanksgiving one year when I was younger, probably when I was in College. It was a nice family owned restaurant, great food, not the terrible buffets you usually see...individual meals...but Mom said never again. Even if it was just the 4 of us, she said it didn't feel right to go out to eat. Of course my favorite diner has a "thanksgiving dinner" plate all the time on the menu, so whenever I want the full turkey/stuffing/gravy/mashed...I can get it!

Being from Canada,

Being from Canada, Thanksgiving was a month ago!  So this is more like an instant replay for me than a gameplan.  wink

We had number 2 son and his girlfriend over for the meal on the Sunday.  Standard fair with turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, my wife's famous carrot/parsnip/squash mold, cranberry sauce and of course pumpkin pie with whipped cream.  Everything was homemade.

There were lots of leftovers, but that's OK as I go into action making stock from the carcass and several pot pies to use up the leftover meat.  Which reminds me, maybe we should have one of those pies for dinner this weekend!

Now that reminds me Sco, I

Now that reminds me Sco, I have in the freezer a big Boston Butt and my brother coming into town next Saturday for the week of Thanksgiving.  So maybe I'll thaw that out about Thursday and then smoke it Saturday to have throughout the week....

Clearing out

Since I determined that I was making the dinner, the last 2 weekends have been freezer cleanout mode. It is kind of funny how I will take a container out thinking it might be one thing, and it turns out to be another...that is why the leftovers that aren't as saucy go into freezer bags, so I can write date and what it is. Tonite's dinner was an asian scallop curry that enabled me to use up coconut milk from 2 or 3 years ago, oops. I have pretty much made enough space I think, but actually this is a good exercise in clearing the forgotten items out. Last time I had to do that was hurricane Sandy when we lost power.

Making space for planned turkey and stuffing leftovers, which will be nice to pull out on a blustery winter eve...
