Thoughts on the future of the site

Hi Folks.

Wanted to get your opinions on the site and it's future.  Coming up in about 6 months, it'll be time to renew the hosting arrangement for the site.  We aren't getting any new traffic to the site and all the new users requests I get seem to be hackers wanting to find ways to manipulate the site.  The ad revenue is next to nothing , I think I've made about $9 this month.  So it's not really going to pay for itself at this rate.  I want to try to keep the community and the history around but with Winter coming up, I expect to see us visiting the site even less since we can't play golf.

So anyway, just looking for thoughts.  I'm not sure if I'll renew the hosting arrangement or not.  The work to keep the site secure can get to be a pain and with only a few of us using the site, I'm not sure it makes sense to continue.   I hate to see it die as I feel I've gotten to know you all pretty well and even met a couple of you and past memebers before.  If it does shutdown, perhaps we can all congregate at another golf site and continue our friendships.

But we're still here for at least another 6 months of so.

Scott,

Scott,

It's certainly understandable that you're considering shutting it down.  I appreciate that it is far more work than the value derrived at current traffic levels which seems to be the same issue that the previous owner was facing.

FWIW I have been a member at golfwrx.com for over 5 years.  It's very commercial and can be quite contentious, but they do have a wonderful Classic Golf and Golfers community there of which I have become quite active.  Aimee has posted there on other parts of the site, so that maybe an alternative.

I'll be supportive of whatever you decide with no ill will should you opt to close this site.

GolfWrx has its ups and downs. A lot of arguements, misogeny, but a lot of good equipment info. Our little group will get lost in the shuffle, but it doesn't make sense to host a web site for 6 people. We could start a group on Facebook, I know that Scott and I are on it (for those who are not, it's not the bogeyman, you can sign up and do nothing with it) to share our golfing adventures.

It's not how...it's how many

That's a great idea Aimee!  I'm on Facebook too.  I think your suggestion makes the most sense for a group of a half dozen or so.  yes

I love the group we have and

I love the group we have and I really want to make sure we don't lose the connections we have.   I know for me, when I play and have a good day, one of the first things I look forward too is talking to this group.   So maybe Facebook is a good alternative for a small group.  Well, let's see how things look come next March.  Maybe something will have changed for the better.

NOT GOOD

I have been an active member of this site ever since I started playing golf, some 14 or so years ago. Being new to the game, I was looking for infromation on golf clubs and golf balls, so I'd have an idea of what I should buy and use. The club and ball reviews I found it this site were a Great Help to this new golfer, and I've been coming back ever since. I've met a few of the site members over the years and have played golf with Scott, Jake, Wade, Laney, and Bill Hall.

Like the rest of you, I have been to other sites off and on over the years. again mostly to Learn things about this crazy game, and recently to pass on what I've learned to other golfers looking for infromation. One site that I've been to for a long time is Golfrewound, which is a decent site, and NOT so big that you get lost on it. Some of the regulars are really NICE while a few are NOT so nice to deal with.

Last time i checked, we have like FIVE active members on this site, with one newer poster that have been here a few times. Like Scott, I don't see the site getting Bigger in the near future, especially with winter coming up soon. ONE thing I would like to do IF the site does shut down would be the EXCHANGE EMAIL addureses with each of you so we can keep in touch in the future,  Facebook would be another way to keep in touch as well. I DO have a Facebook account, but I almost never use it, so it would take a little effort on my part to get in the habit of using it more.  With the small amount of triffiic this site is getting in recent years, I don't know if it's worth the effort it wourld take to keep in up and running. As Scoot as mentioned, the site is NOT makeing money so it's hard to justify putting it the time to keep it going. My Golf Spy is another golf site that postes equipment reviews on a regular basis, and this small site has been left behind in recent years, in some part to the big changes that have taken place with the internet as a whole. As much as a HATE to say it, I think Scott would be doing the smart thing if he decides NOT to renew the site come March. I don't remember the last time we had a posting form Doc out on the west coast.

Any updates Scott

March is coming up pretty soon, and  I was wondering if you have any current ideas as to the future of this site. NOT a lot of posting going on and NOT many users these days.

What are your throuhts on the sites future?

Well good question Don.  Very

Well good question Don.  Very little activity these days and next to no ad revenue coming in to offset the hosting costs.  But I enjoy having this place for our close group to chat about our golfing experiences and just life in general.  I remember Aimee mentioning how we might get lost in a larger online golf community, and I do think that's possible.   Chris, the former owner of the site, struggled to get any gains in membership, even the contests didn't keep new members here.  Most of the new account requests are spam bot requests which never login.

I was leaning to letting the hosting contract expire and letting it go but I sort of hate to do that.  Right now, it runs pretty well with little effort on my part.  At the same time, Its hard to justify doing a lot to the site given it's just us 4 -6 users.  Tough to be a golf gear review site that doesn't get many golf gear reviews.  I wasn't successful in getting any new members when i put together an online social media campaign.  Now if I had the passion for it, I could work to record video interviews, setup a Youtube channel and do more stuff that way.  But I don't really have that passion or time.

So I'll take a fresh look at it in a couple weeks, after I get back from vacation and see how I'm feeling.  It's not a lot of money to host it for another year so I may just let that happen.   Do others have thoughts?

Happy Birthday Scott

Well here's an early Happy Birthday for you. 50 on Sunday  it is.Must be nice to turn 50 I can barely remember back to when I turned 50 as it was almost 19 years ago come April. I remember that my wife got a candle in the shape of the number 50 for my cake so we would NOT burn down the house. from lighting 50 candles.

It's April

Well it's April and we are still up and running, so I guess Scott has decided to renew the site agreement with the server. Good to know I've got one golf site still up and running to visit everyday of the week. And I hope that Scott had a nice 50th birthday and didn't burn down any building with the fire from the candles on his cake. I was already 54 when I started playing this crazy game, so I have no idea what it would be like to be only 50 and hitting golf balls around, Must be nice to be young and full of energy.
