Golf Club Reviews and Discussions
OK folks, this is one of the most important topics we've had: Tell us about your latest round of golf. The good, the bad, and everything in between.
played on 11/16, it was mid 50's, sunny, and no wind. This weekend was way too cold to play, so that may have been the "grand finale" for the year. Here in NJ we try to play up to Thanksgiving, but rarely get into December.
Shot a 90, lost one ball, had 33 putts. I'll call it an "acceptable" round.
It's not how...it's how many
To me, anything under 100 is a good round. Yet, I wait for that day.
Practice like you play. Play like you practice.
I don't normally hit a sand wedge 170 yards. But when I do, it's from a greenside bunker.
I have not played golf in probably a month. I think this might be the longest time I've gone without playing in forever. Weather mostly, but also some work related stuff too. I'm taking off for an extended time starting next week so hopefully the weather will cooperate. It's supposed to be upper 50's so I'm hitting the course. May even take a short trip to Myrtle and play there. We'll see. I hate having to live vicariously through others!!!!
Golf is a game that can only be played...
rusty here, too. Had our second snowfall last night. Although it is supposed to warm up to low 50's on Saturday, it is going to be wet. If it doesn't rain, maybe can hit the range, but not likely with stuff we have to do on Sat.
Near 70 tomorrow and into the weekend. Hoping to get a round in tomorrow...going to be ugly!
too soggy here to play...
snow still melting, but since it will be warm we plan on going to the range
I'm going to have to live vicariously through you two for the next few months. ;)
On the plus side, the local soccer dome opens in January to golf from Mon-Fri daytime hours. At least I'll have the opportunity to hit a few balls to try to keep the swing from completely abandoning me.
Wasn't too bad, for not having played in over a month. I shot 85 which was about as good as I was expecting to play but in fact, it could have been much better. I played the first 5 holes wearing new contacts so I could see if the problems I've had in the past with contacts was not going to be a problem ith these new one. But alas, it was still an issue. So I was 5 over on the first 4 holes, with 2 dbl bogeys. Swapped out to glasses after that and finished the rest of that 9 in 2 over. Then I screwed up 2 reachable Par 5's on the back 9, having makeable birdie putts and managing to Par 1 and a 3putt bogey on the other one. So, all things considered, I'm OK with it.
Interesting thing was how much the cooler weather seemed to affect the ball. Near the end of the round, we have a short Par 3, which I probably underestimated the impact on the wind on but I hit a full 9iron solid and DIDN'T even reach the green. Tee marker was 136 yards, and it was downhill but into the wind. So I'm guessing the cooler temps also reduced the distance.
We had a mid-50s day so we ventured out to Oak Hollow Golf club to play. Hit the range and actually did some stretching before hand and loosened up. Haven't played much since Oct so had pretty low expectations for the round. Started off by birding the first hole with 3 really good shots. Then lost a ball OB and the day pretty much came back to normal from there. :)
Hit some good shots but the driver was off and I sent most of my tee shots right, which on a tree lined course, isn't a good way to score well. Greens were very slow which is a bad thing for me. Never felt comfortable hitting putts.
SHot 85 on the day, 41/44. But it was nice to get the rust off. May plan Monday or Tuesday as well.
So I'm not sure if I'll get to play any time soon. Between very cold temps and now rain, might be another couple weeks before I get to swing a club. but with the way my back acted up last week, that's probably a goo d thing.
Anyone getting out?
Well, I played today, we had unbelievable weather. Probably got up as high as mid-60s. Played Tot Hill Farm, pretty difficult course with lots of elevation changes, complex greens layouts and blind shots. Anyway, played well shot 37/41 double bogeying the last hole. Had 2 birdies. One of them was after a penalty on the tee shot of a Par 5 and I proceeded to hit a hybrid to within 3 ft which I made. Strange birdie but a birdie none the less.
Incredible weather today, high 60's. Got out to play a course I've never played before, Yadkin County Club. Not much of a country club..more "country". But I really liked the layout. Not a course where holes were side by side. Lots of undulations. Shot 81 which was OK given the layoff and my back. Was looking good until I hit a stretch of 4 holes on the back where I went 6 over. Did birdie 1 hole and had 2 doubles. But COLD coming in tomorrow so not sure I'll play again for awhile.
nice to find a hidden gem, right?
Yes it was. Will go back later in the season and see how it is then. I expect the bare spots will still be bare but if they just were able to work those and the tee boxes, it would be a nice course.
Weather today has dropped 40+ degrees from yesterday. In the 20's and snow and ice coming down. Wednesday we have a tee time and it's supposed to be 53. Strange.
today. Left work at noon and was able to play 18. It was upper 40's and maybe got to 50 but I had layers on so it was fine. Course was wet from the ice/snow Monday night. But first hole, I drive it into a fairway bunker and proceed to hole the shot for eagle. Holed a 75 yard bunker shot and didn't get to see it go in due to the elevation change. I knew it was up there close. So that was a nice way to start the round.
Finished with a few of bogeys and 1 double and a handful of pars to shoot 78. So not bad. Back held up ok. Now more cold coming in....augh!
the weather is teasing you...I almost think I'm better off with my no chance of playing golf vs. a day here and there to tempt me.
the weather is teasing you...I almost think I'm better off with my no chance of playing golf vs. a day here and there to tempt me.
I'm with you Aimee. I think that is why we didn't take our clubs with us to Florida so as not to be tempted and then not get back out again for another month (or more at this rate)!
So yesterday we played golf..today freezing rain and sleet, Sat and Sun itll be upper 60's and 72 next Monday. Strange days...
Snuck in another round ... temps reached about 60 Friday. But I didn't realize that the winds would too :(
Actually thought I shot pretty well...Played well, didn't score well. Shot 80 but I really walked off the course thinking I shot about 77. But hit a few good shots into the wrong places. Did manage back to back birdies to start the back 9. But playing in elevation changes with 2+ club winds is tough. Shot 42 - 38 with 2 dbls
Wednesday am playing the TPC in Las Vegas. Please, NO SNOW!!!!
60 degrees on Saturday (pretty windy) and we got snow Sunday night into Monday morning. Hard to think that I haven't been able to play yet. If I had gone out on Saturday it would have been soggy and way too windy, probably only 9 holes. Just as happy going to the range to do more work.
But that photo doesn't look like the usual ratty dog track course!
Well, I'll post some photos once I get back but man, the TPC course I played in Summerlin Las vegas area was pretty darn awesome. I mean the views, the course..just super nice and wow, the homes that border the thing...clearly i'm in the wrong line of work!
but had a blast. Posts 83...swing went whacky near the start of the back 9...had some bad swings and some bad chips. But managed a birdie and a lot of par's so it's all good.
Lmost 70 here...and 40 and rainy back home in the Carolina's. Tough to leave this weather!
Went out on Sat for the first round of the year. Starter said "I hope you have rocks in your shoes". The wind was gusting 15-20 mph and the sun didn't come out until 18th hole, so it didn't feel as warm as forcasted.
Shot about 100, bogey or double on every hole. Had a shot at par on two holes, had one GIR but three putted, another hole hit a nice wedge in close but missed the putt. Grass still dormant, so putting was fairly quick.
No doubt the short game goes out the window not playing for 4 months.
Neither round scored well but hit some good shots in each. Last one I think I started drinking too much beer and got careless. Was 3-over after 9 and then just made 1 mistake a hole and am blaming it on the beer. :)
Played on Sunday, it was cloudless, wind no more than 5-6 mph and got up to 60 degrees. Conditions were good, the grass is starting to grow in on fairways and greens, they are actually aerating the course we played today. We played the West course, park land style. Saw a bunch of young deer, a rabbit, and the usual birds (no turkeys).
I shot 101 with one ball into the pond, but it wasn't as bad as the score. I had a ton, like maybe 4-5 three putts, which is unusual. I kept missing just to the right of the hole (speed was generally OK) because I think I was trying to force more the straight forward/back stroke instead of allowing the putterface to do the gate swing/arc thing. Hence, not fully closing putter face at end of stroke and sending the ball right. Taking those lost strokes and the penalty out...it was more of a mid-90's round which is OK for second time out.
Hit the driver very straight, happy with that. Made par on #18, par 5 (only par of the day) because 1-putted. I had a GIR on another hole (also par 5) but 3-putted so I blew that one.
Golf is a tough game. Man, just when you think you figure something out, it all goes to hell. Played in beautiful weather this morning but played like a dog! Recovery game was on which helped me save pars on a lot of hole but nothing about the swing felt right. Have to add up the score but it wasn't a round I'd like to remember :)
Not sure if it was the back tight, I tried to stretch out before hand. Or just bad swing mechanics. But topped shots, blocked right, thin shots, it was all out there today.
Have to hit the range later in the week when the rain leaves
As noted in my comments about range session, all messed up with irons. Since we had a late-ish tee time (11:40) went to the course early so I could hit a small bucket at the range first and try to work things out. Michael said I was still too open in my shoulders (which would exacerbate my outside/in swing path) so I tried to work on getting more square. Hit a couple of shots OK, still not consistent.
We were paired with another couple, nice people, little older. Rocky front nine, I had 2 pars/2 GIR and 20 putts for 47. Back nine was a bit better, feeling a little less shaky over the irons (not that I didn't screw up too many shots) and had 1 par/1 GIR and 17 putts for a 45. 92 total for a shaky round, talk about grinding.
I hit a couple of awesome shots off the fairway with 4W and hybrid, one where I made the green in 2 on a par 4 I was off the fairway and practically hit the hybrid with my eyes closed because I had something in my eye and it was killing me! Winds were 15 mph and got really bad on a couple of holes where it was +2 clubs. Ground was firm and fast, so I was playing Texas style golf, low runners in a lot of instances.
Played on Friday (office closed early) and Sunday. Shot 95 both rounds, same course. But it wasn't the same kind of play the two days, hard to explain. Don't remember much of Friday's round, but Sunday it was pretty breezy and there were times it really affected the ball flight. Had a terrible 50 on front 9 (hit into the water as is my usual M.O. on hole #9), better on back 9, had a couple of pars and could have had a 42 if I hadn't messed up a couple of easy shots. Oh well, wound up with 45. Still not hitting irons consistently, it's so frustrating that meat and potatoes shots that I looked forward to (short irons into green) give me the shakes now. Must get a lesson in before FL trip.
We played again Friday as well and started out OK but then lost some shots and started loosing tee shots right. Made a few scrambled Pars but shot 84. Two birdies on the day were the highlight, but followed those with bogies so didn't get to build on them. Have been at the range trying to build some consistency. Hopefully it'll come around.
Today's round was a mixed bag. Played the longest/most difficult of our county courses, wound up being paired with same Asian couple that we played with a couple of weeks ago. If I used the modified stance with right foot angled back, I was able to hit irons and wedges OK. A bit short on distance, since I am not taking a full swing, but at least the ball goes forward instead of sideways. As soon as I tried a more normal stance and full swing, fail. Made a couple of pars, but more doubles than anything else. Going to have to stick with this for a while. Playing probably 4 times in FL later this week, so more time to work on it.
Played Yesterday...incredible weather (going to rain the next 3 days..sigh)
Something went well some others didn't. Birdied the first hole hitting a good drive and a good iron shot and making a 10 ft putt on bumpy greens. Surprised actually. Then doubled a par 3, lost a ball off the tee on the next hole, managed par with a great approach, and that was my day. Hit some very solid shots and then some pushed right into hazards. Chipped really well all day, saved me probably 4 strokes by my chips windy up by the flag.
Working on making sure the my shoulders aren't too open and that's helped but if I get them too closed, shots go right. Anyway, shot 83 but could have been a lot better without that "where the hell did that come from" swings. LOL
Probably not playing till maybe Friday given the weather...
