Range closing soon

I recently got an email from the city of Aurora letting me know that one of the city golf courses will be closing about a week before Christmas. Turns out Fitssimmon's Golf Course which is being run by the city is really owned by someone else, only being managed by the city of Aurora. The golf course opened in 1918 as a 3 hole course with SAND greens not grass. It was then turned into an 18 hole course as part of the old Fitssimmons Army hospital. It was one of General David Issenout's favorite golf course when he was in the Army and then when he became the Presidant. He played there as often as he got the chance, and there is a tree in the middle of one fairway that has a sign on it saying it's "Ike's Tree"  Story has it the General almost always had his tee shot on that hole wind up behind the tree, and he had to chip out to the side to get past it, so they but his name on the tree. The last week that the course will be open for play they are going to let city residants play the course with a cart for $19.18. for the year it first opened. Might have to play 18 holes with the wife before it's gone forever. We have played it a number of times in the past and it should be fun to play it one last time before it's turned into a new office building of some kind as part of the new hosipatal complex. .

Wow Don, that's pretty cool.

Wow Don, that's pretty cool. Sounds like it's worth the going out.  That's pretty inexpensive...

I agree with you Scott. It's

I agree with you Scott. It's a pretty nice par 71 18 hole course that I've played a dozen times or so. Not too hard nor too easy of a layout. There are a reasonable number of trees along the course, but not too many so that it's a pain to get around them. The par 4 hole that has Ike's Tree in the middle of the fairway is fun. The tree is right at the point where the fairway turns the corner of the dogleg right fairway. I remember the hole mainly due to hitting my second shot from the fairway one time and having my ball end up inside of about 6 inches of the cup. My playing partner and I were paired up with two golfers we didn't know, and when my ball stopped right next to the hole, one of them picked up my ball and threw it toward me and said it was a gimme. Needless to say I wanted to hit the guy over the head with my club for that. One of the best shots I hit all year and he just picked it up and I wan't able to get to the green in time to tell him to leave it alone so I could tap it in for a birdie. IF it was someone I played with regularly it would be one thing, but with a stranger doint this, it was out of line in my book. And he didn't even ask  if it was okay or not, he just picked it up.

Don, I know what you mean.  I

Don, I know what you mean.  I make a point when I'm playing with someone to motion to them in situations like that to say "it's good by me if you want it".  Most guys I know will say yes, and take the ball and go because they're not posting their scores for handicap.  But I play with a few who are like "no, I need to make those" which is what I try to do.  Don't alway make them but I try !
